Were these cars just power assist steering with a ram, or were power and manual boxes different? It's just a drag car, so theoretically I can just eliminate the ram and pump right?

Yes, they were power assist. You will need a manual center link and pitman arm. I used a manual box I had and a new center link. If you use the power box I think the ratio is different than the non-power.

Yup, ratio is 16:1 for P/S vs 21:1 for manual...

It will steer rather stiff on the quicker ratio without assist, but if you are using skinnies up front it really won't be that noticeable... There is also a power steering eliminator avail from some of the resto dealers that replaces the valve and you can still use your original pittman arm... Haven't looked may be some on ebay...

    BTW

Mav steering boxes are same as used on '66-'71, Falcon, Torino & Cyclone...

Thanks. I got a center link from the wrecking yard today, already had a pitman.

i just did the pitman and link on a previous powersteering box. i am using quite wide front tires. its a little tough going slow but i actually like it a lot more.
