Hey everybody! I havnt posted on here for awhile and just wanted to let everyone know how I've been.

I haven't driven my maverick for a couple years now. I tore out the 302 I had inside of it. It was a rebuilt and had h/c/I also carbed with a 750 double pumper. I was about to put a 351w in but I learned that I was expecting a little one. So a couple years later and now with two kids and most of my goodie parts sold (even my transmission) I'm looking to get back on driving the maverick on the road.

I'm gonna be going to pick and pull soon and pull out a 5.0 roller short block and transmission from a mustang and the heads from a Explorer (gt40) and go hunt down a intake and carbs there too as well. My cost would be 208. 99 for complete engine with carb and the transmission will be 150.00.

So I'm not trying to go fast for right now I just want to get it running again so I'm gonna do some gasket and seal changes (heads, intake, oil pan, rear main seal, and exhaust) I'm gonna use any part that can be salvaged from the motor so I do not have to spend than I need to and also I'm going to be using some old parts from the old 302 (oil pump, fuel pump, timing chain cover, distributor I'm gonna switch the gear drive on it, and that's it. I estimated with all the extra goodies I should be able cover with an extra 400 (just to get it rolling) and can finally cruise around in the maverick.
I'm looking to see if anyone has any details that I left out that need to be done as well and also and good stock intakes and carbs to look from what vehicles. Thank you and hope everyone is doing good!

There are few if any stock carb intakes that are worth a hoot. I would look for a used Weiand Stealth, Edelbrock Performer or Summit Stage 2 intake on "LetGo" ,"Craigslist" or "Adhuntr". A Summit 600 CFM street carb with vacuum secondary's is a nice street carb for a mild combo and has excellent throttle response. There are a number of other good street carbs from Holley and QFT as well. Keep your eye out on the aforementioned sites and you will find a used one. Most old Ford four barrels are going to be worn out, require a rebuild at a minimum and will not typically match the performance of today's carbs.

I used to have the stealth and that is a really great intake but I'm trying to go completely stock so I might have to get iron intake and a 2 barrel from a oem Ford vehicle just to get it going for now

Keep your eyes peeled and you can get some great deals. I have a Performer RPM Air Gap that was bolted to the engine, ran for a week and pulled that I gave $100 for and a Holley 1850 I bought for $50. Cheap entry for aftermarket induction! Still on the lookout for a screaming deal on a 650 double pumper though.

Yes that what I'm planning to do is be on the lookout if there are some aftermarket intakes out there with a decent carb.

An Explorer short block is likely to be in far better condition than something from a Stang, especially in a pick and pull(likely if it was any good it's already gone)... A complete engine minus intake from a '96 or EARLY '97 Exploder would be your best bet, those have GT40 heads vs the GT40P of later models...

I'd recommend using the forum's search function and type in few different searches such as roller block, GT40 heads, Explorer engine, etc and take note because there are are great tips from the contributors in those postings. Good luck and keep us up to date with your progress.

Well if you pull the whole explorer engine, you could sale the intake to someone with a foxbody looking to do an upgrade and make a little money back. You'll need your oil pan off your old 302 as well. Sounds like a good plan and about what I did with my Comet to get it up and running. - Matt

Thank you for everybody's insight about what to choose! Would the Explorer engine be OK with the same camshaft in it? I read that the mustang and Explorer cams are different and what about pistons as well? Also maybe I will so I can make an extra buck. I just want it going quickly instead of doing a waiting game for an selling the intake but maybe I can trade someone for a decent carb intake? I still have my old oil pan so I will be using that as well thank you!

The HO cam may make 10Hp over Explorer stick...

The GT-40 heads no doubt make 20-25 Hp more than the wheezie E7...

Oh wow that thing looks radical! I've had the torker-II intake and the stealth on my old 302 and the stealth was so much more fun on bottom end but with the torker-II I couldn't really feel anything until around 2300 rooms and then it would just keep pulling hard.

Oh and the only reason why I was still considering the mustang 5.0 was cause I need the transmission as well so I just wanted to pull it all out together but if I have too I'll disassemble the T5 from the block and keep the flywheel and clutch if they are salvageable.

By time you bought carbs and linkage for that intake you'd probably have 3x that askin' price...

No doubt! If I were to buy it I would probably just hang it on the wall for decoraton.
