how much body work does your car need? every dent and rod hole is just gonna make it that much more expensive. assuming you had a really nice body and wanted to get a good quality paint job (not macco) i'd think somewhere around 3k??
yeah the body is in great shape and i would like to get it a very nice paint job.....so around 3 k ...and where might i take it to get this done??
are there alot of classic car events in your area? car shows, cruises, club gatherings? i would just suggest asking some of the owners there. assuming most of them got their cars painted locally they may be able to put you on to some of the good shops in the area and also tell you which ones to keep away from.
If the prep work is done right. Macco will give you a good paint job if you opt for their top of the line such as base coat / clear coat. It'l probably run $1500-2000.
A lot of people don't like the thought of a Macco paint job on a car they plan to keep, but he is right.. We had this car painted by Macco about a year ago, my dad and I did all the prep work on it. It turned out great, people never guess it's a Macco paint job until you tell them.
Decent at best. These guys are in the production paint business. They are not going to take the time and do a 1st class paint job on your car. These shops usually bring in a car on Monday and deliver it back to the owner Tuesday or Wednesday. If you gave em $2000, they might keep it till Friday. If you want a GOOD paint job take the car to a GOOD Paint and Body Shop!!! If you don't really care and you wanna save money, take it to Maaco or Fact-O-Bake or similar. REMEMBER!!! You get what you PAY for!!!
That's it in a nutshell...preparation! Any good painter can spray a car but if it's not prepped right it's gonna look like crap and not hold up. I'm not saying Maaco doesn't have any good painters because I know they can have. It's like I said though, the company makes them push these cars thru one after the other. A similar company offered me a job running their shop about five years ago. I went on a tour of their shop and they told me how they operate. They told me the cost of materials they use for an entire car was less then $100 . I spend at a minimum $600 for an entire car. After watching their operation for about 30 minutes and listening to the owner explain everything they do I lost a LOT of respect of him as an individual and as a company!
Well, I can only speak for my own personal experience. The car was 5 different colors before it was repainted, so just to have it all one color again was a plus at the time and didn't have the money to go spend 3 or 4k on a paint job. They knocked a good bit of money off the price because we let them keep the car for about a week and a half, they used it as an example to get recertified or something like that. They buffed it out and waxed it and everything. It still looks good a year later. We'll see how it weathers in the future.
Ray, i stopped by one of those places with a S/W and they told me to go eat breakfast and come back...30-45 mins. i told the guy ...that was a little too fast......if it had been a stolen car...maybe... frank
Macco painted a car for me once....6 mo. later at a car wash i blew all the paint off they put on ...$3.25 later it was primer... it came off in sheets. people were driving by and turning around and coming back to see if they saw what they saw... the guy at Macco said it was "the car wash". strange...my car was the only one there at the car wash that it happened to... ...JMO...
Sounds like they didn't prepare it properly prior to painting. We did that ourselves and then just took it to them to spray it. The car has been through the car wash a whole bunch of times now, the paint shows no signs of coming off.
