We pulled the 200 straight six out of my brother's 77' today. We need to rebuild it, and I have never done an overhaul before. All we want is for it to run well and get good gas mileage, we arent really interested in any high performance stuff(not yet).

I know this probably boring to you guys, but what kit/parts should I get for a reliable stock overhaul. Any other tips are welcome.

And as a sidenote, can anyone here in the Austin, Texas area recommend a good machine shop for the head and block?

is it possible to find a good used 200? it would be faster (to fix) and possibly cheaper in the end.

Well since you got it out and you don't want to go V8, why not stick a 250 back in? Of course it would require changeing the frame mounts and bell housing.

Yeah I would love to replace the thing with a new/rebuilt one, the problem is, the lowest I have been quoted is $1200 bucks for one, and that is and the is autozone rebuilt crap, i am NOT paying that much for a 30 year old 6 banger. Everyone tells me it'd be cheaper to buy a 302 but we are looking for gas mileage here! Damn the man why are 200's so expensive????

It uses the same Bell but the mounts are 250 specific. Very easy to find though since it seems the majority of Mavericks came with 250's. I have 2 extra sets of 250 mounts just sitting around and 3 bell housings.

If all it takes is mounts and a bell house, does anyone have/know where to get a cheap 250? I hear the 250 will get 30 mpg and thats totally good.

I have a 250 six in my Comet and it gets pretty good mileage (don't recall ever getting 30mpg, but it did get over 26 when it was under 100,000 many miles ago--it's at an unrestored 222,000+ miles now). I like the 250 six engines--they're pretty bullit proof. Just keep the oil changed and do all normal scheduled maintenance. You just can't kill them.

A plain old 302 2bbl will usually get the same or better mileage(depending on terain)in these cars. And the v8 isn't much heavier than the 200 either.
