you should be able to just drop the pan, I did it several times with the 8 in place, and an extra crossmember the 6 wont have.

Should be able to do it. Worse case you will have to drop the drag link down.

Sounds like the oil pump is shot. Light comes on while in gear because that slows the engine speed down just enough to trigger the low oil pressure light. When you take it out of gear it gains enough RPM'S to increase the oil pressure thus turning off the light. Valve train noise is probably not enough oil pressure to keep the lifters pumped up fully which may also mean they are worn too much to work properly even with a new oil pump. IMO you better get that oil pump changed quick.

im changing the one in my 250 soon too

doesnt look like anything needs to come out but i may need to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the block up a little. no biggie

i always thought oil pumps tended to have problems at high rpms when they started to go bad, not the reverse. but i guess its possible

You will certainly have a lot more damage at high RPM'S if the oil pump is bad because with everything flying around in there at high rev's you need more oil to keep it lubed and prevent damage. I am just saying that a low oil pressure light at very low RPM'S and not at higher RPM'S is a classic sign of an oil pump going bad. Normally the light won't come on at low RPM'S because the pump is capable of maintaining enough pressure . When it's bad the pump is not turning fast enough at low RPM'S to maintain pressure and that triggers the light.
