Love my Maverick, 1970, one lady owner prior to me all original, grabs attention.

it certainly grabs my attention because about 2 to 5 minutes after I have turned of the ignition it makes a kind of pfffft noise like escaping air sometimes with a mild clunk sound. Anyone have any idea whats it could be???

Yes it usually happens when I have driven for a length time.

This would be a good one for car talk lol. Too bad they retired. What you have to do is drive the car until it warms up, then pop the hood and patiently wait for the noise and see if you notice anything odd. Also grab a funnel and put it up to your ear and try to figure out where the noise is coming from.

I have been trying to do just that, it only does it when I quit looking. BTW the car talk guys are still on NPR Sunday morning but I find them to irritating to call them. My guess is its coming from the block or possibly the manifold

:rofl2:Wow, I'm curious about this one! The one problem my car hasn't EVER had...it doesn't fart!

Seriously though, I would do like MSmithPDX said....drive it in a way that you usually get this result. Before turning it off, pop the hood and take off your air cleaner. I'm wondering if you have some blowback up thru the carb.

If your car has factory a/c, the heater and a/c controls are vacuum controlled, so once you turn the engine off, the vacuum disappears...and a diaphragm could be making the noise.

I'm guessing you could use a vacuum hand pump connected to the system to simulate the condition, without having to run the engine...

Make sure your gas tank vents properly! The " clunk " may be the fuel tank returning to its normal size after it got " sucked " in by vacuum! I have had this happen on several cars over the years. :)
