Howdy, :Handshake I am new here so here is a little background on me. I am passing the double nickles in life but still 16 at heart. Married with 5 kids and 5 grandsons, three dogs and a drive and garage full of cars and trucks. I enjoy a variety of hobbies. I live in Colorado but grew up in Pa. We are getting ready to move back home next spring. This is my question about the DOT laws in Pa. My 65 Comet was a virgin one owner when my wife bought it for me for Christmas back in 97 so I left it stock but in Feb of this year I was hit in the rear and it was hurt severly but fixable. Now that it is in need of major work, how far can I go without Pa. saying it is not road legal? I have a bunch of parts left over from my younger days that need a better home than collecting dust in the corner of the garage. Alston 11 gauge 2x3 chassis, Art Morrison suspension and steering components, Morrison Ladder bar w/ coil over rear suspension, 9" w/outboard disc and the list goes on. Now I know these are old school parts but the car is old and so am I so everything fits If I build this monster is it going to pass safety inspection?? They used to be kinda sticky about oem to aftermarket changes. Can anyone shed a little light. Thanks
Where in PA are you planning to move to? In the last 3 years, I have been to dozens of car shows that have highly modified cars, PA licensed and inspected, driven to the shows. I checked with my inspection station and was told that, there would be no problem as long as all of the lights work (including the ability to aim them properly), good brakes and tires, wipers work, non-leaking exhaust system etc. Pretty much everything must be in good working order the same if it was a car that was not modified. Without needing a PA emissions test (because of the car's age), I can't see a reason to even lift the hood or test the gas tank (cell in my case). I also looked into getting a specialized license plate for my car. Some plates say that the car can not modified like "antique or classic car". There is a "collectible car" plate that seems to not care what you modifiy on the car but to get it, you must supply photos of a finished car including paint so I'm not looking into getting one of them to soon. If you look deeper into it and learn something, please let me know. :Handshake
Hi Mav1970, I am looking at a few different areas because of family. My oldest brother lives in Bloomsburg so we are looking around Berwick and my next to older brother lives in Sunbury so that is an option then my youngest daughter lives in the montrose area so that is another option plus we have looked at some places in the Scranton Wilkesbarre area but it will be in that north east 1/4 of the state. I have some guys that I went to school with that had garages back there but I haven't talked to them in years so if I can find them maybe I can get some info there. Will let you know what I find out. Thanks.
Damn, you're talking right in my back yard. I live in Mountain Top, 7 miles south of Wilkes Barre, on Route 437, just off of Route 309. Berwick is 15 miles from me. We don't miss the Bloomsburg Fair for any reason! I can set you up with that same inspection station in Nuangola that I use. Small world :Handshake
your kidding, could be some good times ahead. Bloom fair is a worthy event for sure. finally figured out the delete process now I will try to update my info
Yep, PA isn't as picky as it used to be. If the car passes safety inspection you'll be ok. They will open the hood to make sure your master cylinder isn't leaking and check the windshield washer bottle. Years ago we couldn't have modified exhaust, suspension or tires. And inspection was every six months instead of yearly like we have now. It was always a thrash to change to your "inspection parts".
Yeah, funny story... Got pulled over by a state cop once, it was raining. He laid his Smokey Bear hat on my trunk and crawled under my car and I heard him down there saying "These mufflers are illegal, the traction bars are illegal, the tires are illegal, the air shocks are illegal..." I'm visualizing dollar bills flying out of my wallet. He crawls back out from under the car, his uniform is soaked down one side, he puts his wet hat back on and says "Drive safely now" and gets back into his car and pulls off, leaving me standing there thinking "WTF"?
