hi, just purchased my first maverick. I had looked for one a while ago and just came accross one within 5 miles from my house for sale yesterday. purchased it today. it's a 1970 yellow with a 6 in it. a little rough with almost no rust. old lady owned it from day one until she passed. garaged kept... I guess that explains the min rust. I'm sure I'll have a million questions when I start messing with it this weekend. I think the first question I would have is can I get this baby to move with some mods to the 6 or should I just drop an 8 in it? I heard a guy was running low 15's with a 4bbl added to his 6. any info would be great.

    thanks
    c.b.

welcome to the board. even after you mod the six you won't go fast enough. instead of spending a lot of money, then changing. do it right the first time and go for the 302. this can give you more power than you'll need.:Welcome:

hey guy's, thanks for the welcome. how hard is it to drop a 302 in it? what do I have to change to get the 302 to fit? I heard the trans will bolt up but how can I tell?

    thanks

The trans in the 70 will work but the bell housing will have to be changed. You will need one from a 250 I6 or a 302, to include the torque plate. You will need a set of frame stands. You can get those from someone here or you can buy them new from Crites for $99. You will also need all the stuff to for the 302 like engine mounts witch you can get new from any parts store, just get them for a 71 and up due to the fact that no 70 models came woth a V8. and all the pullies and sort for the front of the engine. It would also be advised to get a V8 radiator. The stock one out of a 70 will most likly be too small for the V8. It is a pretty simple swap and has been done many many times. Just ask any questions that you think you need to know and they will be answered here.

Welcom to the board and good luck.

    Don

Frame stands (mounts) are different on I6 and V8 cars. They are the things that bolt to the frame cross member that the engine mounts bolt to.

anyone know where I can find a 302 in the new jersey area? also, does the motor have to be older (70's) to make the swap easy?

    thanks

    Motor

I just noticed that the motor in the car is an I6 250. so the trans from this should bolt up to a 302?

    Getting Back Into The Swing

Just wanted to say hi to everyone on the forum. my name is William and I'm in the military and currently stationed in Egypt. I will come back to the US in January and will be stationed at Fort Bliss Texas. I don't currently own a Maverick but have owned two in the past. I love Fords and have three Mustangs but nothing can take the place of my Mavericks. If anyone knows of a Maverick for sale let me know. I can't wait to get another Maverick and get back into the fun of it!
