Ok I found a 79 monarch at the local pull a part, problem is they came with an 8" and a 9". The gal on the phone dont know what it is, and they look the same. What is a sure fire way to tell the differance between the two?

On a nine inch you cant put a socket on the bottom nut under the pinion housing. On an 8 inch you can use a socket on all the carrier nuts.

Thanks guys for the info! I just went out to the shop and looked under the mav at the 8" and then went to a buddys shop to look at a 9" centersection, I now know what you guys meant by the socket test. I know you senior members must get tired of repeating your selfs all the time but this FNG appreaciates your patience. Wish me luck as the pull a part yard said if it was a 9" I could have it for $125, I'll let ya know how it turns out. I'm outa here :burnout:

Good luck. Another quick way is that the 8" has that little hood over the top sticking out the front.:)
