Hello Folks. I need a fuel guage for a 1975 Mav. Can anyone suggest the best place to get one? First time I have ever had to buy a part for Ms. Frankie. It has been determined that the fuel sending unit is ok, so I am told that I need a fuel guage. Thanks in advance. :)

Sure you need a fuel guage? I have never seen them go bad. If your sender is O.K....then it might be the instrument voltage regulator. When theose go bad....usually the gas guage will read FULL all the time.

I have some fuel guages if that is what you need....but I would bet it is the latter.

Hey--thanks, Craig. Well, I am not sure what to do. I took the car to a mechanic (unfortunately, I know nothing about working on cars). He is the one that said I need a guage, but I honestly don't know if he even checked the voltage regulator. One thing, though, it reads empty all the time. What do you suggest? If it turns out that I need the guage, could you please PM me about the price and payment arrangements?
    Thanks. :tiphat:

I hope someone gets back to you. My '74 has the same problem. Always stuck on empty.

I would say it is the fuel sender if it reads empty.

Do a search (or somebody help me out here)....but if you pull the plug off of the fuel sender, and use a jumper wire to "jump" the two female "holes" together. If you do....the guage should read FULL. (I think this is correct)

Otherwise....I have never seen a fuel guage go bad. If it is not the fuel sender....I would next check the wiring harness for a break or a short.

I had this same problem one of my cars recently. The gauge was always empty. I pulled the sender out of the tank and found that the float was cracked and full of gas.
It's easy to check the gauge - you can unplug the harness at the sender for gauge testing like Craig says. How did the mechanic determine that it wasn't in the sender?

Hey, Randy. Well, he had it up on the lifter thing when I got there, and I could see these wires or cables hanging down from the left side of the back end--he said that he had just checked the fuel sending unit, and it was OK--now I don''t know if that was checking by just doing what Craig says or if he actually VISUALIZED the unit. He said then that the next step was to check the stuff behind the dash. I went by the next day and he said it was the fuel guage. Does what I said make ANY sense? Sorry--I sure wish I knew more about this stuff. I always go look it up on howstuffworks.com and it always gives a good explanantion, but without actually SEEING the real parts, etc, you just can't quite "get it". If I had a mentor who could help me to make sure that I don't KILL my car, I would like to try to learn more of this stuff "hands on"---but you know what they say......IF a frog had wings.......

Anyway--thanks for trying to help me guys. If I ever get to come to a "meeting of the Mav minds" I will bring you some home-made cookies, or something. I DO know how to cook. :)
