OK, I have antifreeze dripping off of the bottom of the trans bell housing! The back of the heads and intake are dry (thinking head gasket or intake gasket). The heater core is not hooked up but there is likely some residual antifreeze in the core. My only plausible explanation is either a cracked block (unlikely) or a feeze plug in the back of the block leaking? Is there one back there? Almost forgot, 302 V8, GT40 crate motor with alum heads and intake.
The only freeze plug is the one for the end of the camshaft. You probably still have fluid in the core. I'd just flush it out with water and give it a shot with an air hose. Also check your right side floor, because when mine leaked it also made the carpet wet!
Well, no carpet in the car and the passenger side floor board is dry! I'll keep looking. Just a strange place to find antifreeze.
Back of intake or a freeze plug on the back of a head...If these arent the issue and your certain of the leak being at the back of the engine. (Not migrating there from another place)...Head gasket or cracked block...Check around the bottom head bolt at the back corner.... Tody hade one there recently...
Mavman, I checked that back corner of both heads as that was my first thought. The back of the heads and intake appear to be dry! I agree the migrating leak concept makes sense. But, from where? A cracked block is still a possbility. The car hasn't been running in the last month so the system isn't under pressure.
I just got on here because I just put water in my sons car and have the same issue but I'm running Yates heads on a boss 302 block but leak sounds identical hoping motor don't have to come out again
qkrthnu, with everything being new I'd look at the head gaskets or intake gasket. My problem is the top of the bell housing is dry!
Had that one leak on my blue mav...Machine shop installed it poorly...That was 21 yrs ago...Been installing em myself since.
See if you can borrow or rent a cooling system pressure tester. Use it when the engine is cold and you should find your leak!
problem solved For future reference! The car is parked in a non-insulated garage. So, on hot days the temp in the garage is high creating a small amount of pressure in the cooling system. This was enough pressure to cause a leak. The leak traced as follows. The motor tilts back naturally in the engine bay and the antifreeze traveled down the block, along the head/block interface, to the oil pan rail, dripped of the oil pan/rear main area onto the flexplate, to the bellhousing and onto the floor! As Mavman stated, it migrated from the front of the motor! It was the radiator hose! I've had a terrible time sealing the radiator hose to the thermostat housing and the radiator. Anyone have any suggestions?
I have seen where some new hoses were hung from a thin plastic cord that was actually poked through the hose! Unbelievable!!! Can you tell where the fluid is coming out? I had a hard time finding a leak in mine because of the extremely small hole the cord left in the hose. The hole was about an inch from the end of the hose. Luckily I had enough room to cut off the end where it leaked, and still be able to use it.
I think it is leaking between the hose and thermostat housing. DDB, what style clamps do you use? And where do you buy them?
