can anyone tell me the pros and cons of either? I was lookin at getting the MSD 6al box because I wanted a rev limiter, locally they wanted $205 for it, I bought the HY-FIRE VI al for $155 at the same place and it has an adjustable rev limiter instead of the pulg in modules, are these any good? anyone else using these?

Dont know which is better but if you find out let me know. I just bought the 6AL. Its not installed yet but it was $194 thru Summit. I also got it for the rev limiter....there is also an attachment that you can use to adjust the timing up to 15 degrees.

Have run the MSD for many years without any problems. Mallory has been around a long time too. Just wondering how sensitive the adjustable is in vibration areas of full throttle, tire smoken situations. The plug in module seems a bit more reliable in my situation, I think all the Nascar guys run MSD. I wonder also of any differance in voltage output. JMO

I'm running the HyFire VI A (no rev limiter). Haven't had any problems in two years of using it. It's triggered by a Pertronix Ignitor. Also, it's mounted inside on the passenger-side firewall so it isn't exposed to engine heat. One thing I like about it, and I don't know if the MSD has this or not, there's an LED on it that flashes to let you know it's getting a signal from the distributor.

I bought a MSD 6AL used from a guy at work. Put it in my Spoiler and wow did it make a difference. It was still points and the MSD and coil was not show worthy so I didnt put it in the Mav, like it so much I will buy a new one for it. I will stow it away where it cant be seen though.

I've been thinking about upgrading from the duraspark, I was wondering what specific advantages it offers going to the MSD or Mallory?

I use the Crane box and coil and love it. I have seen a few MSD boxes burn up. The older non digital ones.

Back before Christmas I was asking the same questions as you.

This is what I found out. If you think that you are going to want to "add on" to the system later on with things like start retard,a two step limiter, or a boost/nitous retard. You will be better off in every way by just spending the $279.00 from Summit or Jegs
and get the MSD Digital 6 plus. It has all of the features I just listed, Its controlled by small swtches instead of the Plug in Modules the 6 al uses ,and you wont end up with all of the extra wiring later on. And of coarse ...its digital. I really like mine ! Part #6520.

i have had both go out. but like someone said MSD will plug right in if you use a MSD dist. less wires!

the con is if your using a MSD Dist and Box and if the box goes out.. your screwed.. you can't by pass it. if your using a non MSD dist you'll have to check to see if it will work with it first.. some dist dont all work with a MSD box.

i still perfer MSD though.. but mallory dist are good to.. i still have the same unilite for 17 years now!

FWIW you can buy a pigtail that plugs into your duraspark that plugs into the msd box....and if you have an msd distributer and your msd box fails you could wire in the blue gromet box(duraspark) and yes it will work.

Thanks for the reminder Robert. I ordered the 6AL and assumed it came with that pigtail...I checked last night and it doesnt. Its an additional $19 or so but well worth not having to hassle with the wiring more.

thanks for all the input guys :) , I just wired my mallory up, it was pretty straight forward, actually it was the same as te MSD, I checked out both websites, the only difference I can find is the MSD uses the plug in RPM modules other then that there pretty much the same thing, both putting out the same power and I think the red anodized looks better then the painted MSD 6al just my $.02 I 'm still waitng to finish my engine up before I can try it, my heads should be here fri., then I hope my push rods will work:rolleyes: it never ends!!

My engine just shuts down if it looses the distributor signal.

Yeah, yeah. :D It's a troubleshooting aid so you can tell if the problem is with the trigger or the box.
