I happened across a lot in my travels today and spoted a '72 Comet 4 door for sale parked next to the office. It has rust in most of the usual places and the front bench is torn up, but the rest of the interior is pretty good, except for the crack in the dash ap. It's a 250, ps, auto. Get this...27,000 miles on it! It's going to need work, but it's really no worse than my Stallion was when I found it. I have them at $300 so far and I'm going back tomorrow or Wednesday to see for sure. Wish me luck!
Well, back I went today. Bottom line was it needed the following (at least).. doors, hood, grille, bumpers (rusty), usual rust to rear quarters, torsion boxes, headlights didn't work (hi beams did), turn signal cam, front seat, dash pad, and above all the 250 was shot (had a nasty piston slap or a bad rod). I find it hard to believe that this car had only 27,000 miles on it. They claimed it belonged to an old lady and it sat for a long time. There was no old inspection sticker on it so it must have been from another state. She must have run the motor out of oil at some point or done something to the 250 to have it sound so bad. It didn't sound any better after it warmed up, in fact it sounded like something was going to jump out of the low end when it revved up. I made them an offer and it was rejected. I told them to call me if they reconsider. It's a shame the car got to this point. It'll be an even bigger shame if it ends up at the yard because the lot owner thinks it is worth more than it is.
Had the same type thing happen over the weekend, went to the strip to TNT and guess what? Snow and rain, left the car there started for the house(about 60mi). Listnening to a trading time show on a small town radio station, a fellow had a 71 Maverick for sale with custom hood. I called and found out it was a 2dr with a grabber hood installed. 200 six and auto. Drove to his place on top of a mountain and saw the body was good and interior needs work. Long story short, put it on the trailer and hurried down the mountain before it got real slick. May end up selling it along with my 73 4dr, got no room and no time to restore it. Just could not see letting it sit and get crushed etc.
Yeah, Old Guy, but at least you took it home and I'm glad you fell into something good. This was a disappointment for sure.
