I have a 1974 Maverick with manual front drums. I am in the process of switching the front end over to disc. Does anyone know if the master cylinder existing on the car will work with the new disc setup. The Master cylinder in there now has unequal chambers kind of like I have seen on other disc setups. When I try to look up parts online -- when manual they give one part number. If power then they ask if it has disc? I suppose there were manual disc in 74 so the master cylinder deemed for manual systems works for disc and drum I know 74 was the first year disc were available, they were optional and based off a mustang?? The donor is from a 77 maverick and they list a different part number for the master clyinder for 77 although the calipers and hoses are the same from 74 or 77. I would just like not to swap out the master cylinder if it not really going to make any difference as the one I got is not very old. The switch value or proportion valve looks the same except bolts on differently I think that really only monitors if you loose pressure on one side and the original will work?? Any input advice appreciated:confused:
Yes, it will work just fine with the front disc brakes. Ford used the same master cylinder and distribution block (not a prop. valve) in '74 for both disc and drum equipped Mavericks. I would stick with that set-up if I were you (and adding the front discs). If you experience excessive rear wheel lock-up, then you should install an aftermarket adjustable proportioning valve. Otherwise, the system is fine the way it is...
