I have a friend of a friend that might have a car (Maverick) that may be magazine material. Could someone tell me what steps need to be taken in contacting the magazines? What to expect?
have you tried sending pics and emails to the editors of all the mags...does he go to the car shows as well? These would be the first steps I would take.
send lots of pictures! front 3/4 rear 3/4, engine, interior, trunk. Look on my site you'll kinda figure out what kinda of picture angles they are looking for. more the better. Car has to be finshed not "well i'm going to do this next.. blah blah blah. Also list down what was done to the car. Engine, Interior, body work etc. send it my way. all i can promise you is that i will get it right to the editors hands and avoid the mass mail pile of everyone and their mother that wants there car in the magazine. after that its up to them to call you (so leave your contact info as well) you may never get a call, you may make it only readers rides but you never know it my get a feature too. either way its better then waiting for some editor to see your car at a show. i'd say most of the time its luck and who you know sometimes. however my first feature was from an editor seeing it at a car show. so you never know. good luck send it to Primedia 6420 Wilshire Blvd 9th floor Los Angeles, CA 90048 attn: D. Yee
via e-mail is not a good way to do it. i'd print anything out and send it. most editors don't have time to unzip or look at a cd. e-mails etc. i mean you can.. but thats the way i have seen it work
Hey Maverick Man, Thanks for all the info. I was asking for insight ahead of time so I would know what to expect. After 3 1/2 years on the project I'm looking at maybe another month before completion. I will keep this thread in my file with the address, and hopefully be getting back to you soon. So, do you work for the magazines?
your right about the grass.... but dirt... well that depends the kind of dirt.. we've shot cars at the dirt / rock quarys b4
Whats the beef with grass? I was getting ready to send ya some but their all on grass. Guess I'll hold off.
good question... but i'd say 75% of the mags out there say no grass. it also might have to do with the color green. you also may get some of the color of the green on the car reflecting. best shot would be some old building or white wall in the back ground with nothing else distracting from it. ie: trash cans, telephone poles, other cars and yes even chicks (unless they are asking for it). a good shot would be like the one on on my homepage www.maverickman.com (there are bad pics on that site as well (like the one with the green plants in the background) also the one below it kinda what they look for.. just a tad lighter though... editors love horzion lines on the car. idea time to shot is right before the sun sets. but to get it right you also need to know the setting on a camera. but really anything will do.. but just remember its like a resume for a job... first impressions mean alot! good luck
Oh man, I had that picture hanging up in my locker at school a while back out of the magazine!! -Todd
