i have a 71 comet, 302 v/8,c-4 trans. when i put my knock down rod on"rod that goes from carb to trans" it interreffers with my accelerator. is this vital for the shifting of the car? or, is there away to get around this problem? it has a 650 elderbrock carb sitting on top of a aluminumn intake. thanks in advance for any help you can give me
, the rod is for "passing" gear...all it does is shift the tranny. into 2nd gear. you can do without it... when you go to pass just shift the trans into 2nd and back to drive...frank...
It can be modified to fit, just make sure that it shifts properly. They sell extenders for the rod. Seth
If most people can drive a car with a standard tranny, and downshift when they need to, you can downshift your auto when you need to. I lost my kickdown rod when I added my 2" spacer, and have since had to "pull down" my floor shifter to "pass". But it is not any different than any standard tranny. And, if I am putting a floor shifter on an auto car, I am looking for a standard performance, anyway!
i put an auto floor shift in mine and i can't stop shifting gears. the bride and i were taking a ride yesterday and she ask..."i thought it was an automatic" why are you changing gears? ..."i don't know" i have been doing it from day one...when it was on the column i might have shifted it 1 or 2 times...frank...
I had it that way on my F100 before going to an AOD. BUT, I read somewhere recently, maybe here, that the kickdown rod also adds some fluid pressure when kickdown. Anybody know if this is true? clint
I don't think the kick down rods does anything but kick down the gear when you floor it. I have heard a couple people say that, but I don't think so.
I was just wondering about it since I also have heard it several times from different sources. My 71 F100 seemed to work just fine without it. It would even kick down without the kickdown rod if I was going slow enough. I guess the vacuum modulator and govoner play a part in that clint
I don't have a rod on two of my cars either...one of them for the last 30 years and never a problem. That one also will kick down without the rod by itself but it's not a quick as if the rod was on there. I'm kinda like Frank too...always shifting by hand anyway.
