It's time for your favorite game show....What's it REALLY worth!!!

I went and looked at a Maverick for sale today (side note: I put one of my business cards on the windshield about 5 or 6 years ago. the lady saved it all these years. Just goes to prove that business cards left on a windshield work!!) The lady had saved my business card in case she ever wanted to sell her car.

She bought this 1977 2-door Maverick new from her hometown Ford dealer (which is now closed and I own 3 of their lighted signs that hung out front...bought them at the going out of business auction). 23,000 actual miles. She drove the car very little. 200 6 cyl, AT, PS, manaul disc brakes, dark blue with a dark blue interior. She wanted to see that this car go to a Maverick enthusiast, as she no longer drives at all due to her age.

I went and looked at the car today. From a distance it looked pretty nice. Had the Magnum 500 styled steel wheels on it, missing all the center caps, no outside moldings or trim. I fired it up....ran real well.

Looked it over. Front torque boxes totally rusted out, front bench seat split at all the seams, headliner totally trashed, dash pad had about 47 cracks and chunks missing. Had putty in the rear quarters. Rear passenger side quarter had a 4 x 4 hunk about ready to fall off....except for the screws used to hold the "hunk" on with. Driver's rear quarter had been "rubbed" up against a Cadillac and pushed in a little. Frame rails were good. Back tires were still the original tires!!! fronts were about 4 years old.

Car was painted about 15 years ago. Paint has faded and starting to blister off in several spots. Rear bumper had holes rusted through it, and the rear bumper impact bar was all rusted out. I was surprised the rear bumper was still on the car. Leaf springs were all sperated and lots of rust between the leafs. They were all seperated about a fingers width on each one.

I rated the car as borderline parts car/daily driver. If the torque boxes could be fixed...it might be worth saving...but on the otherhand, a few more things wrong with it and I would have rated it a parts car.

Her children had looked the car up on the internet, and in it's present condition they rated it as being worth $1000 to $1600 (I would love to know what websites they went to!!) She kept going on and on about how it was a collectible, and a classic...but she didn't just want to sell it to anybody that would not apprciate it. She said her kids were afraid she would sell it for $50...not knowing it's true value...that is why they looked it up for her on the internet. She said whenever she drives it around (it has been several years since she has drove it) people were always stopping her and asking her to sell it.....so she knows it must be collectilbe.

Well, I thanked her for her time, and told her I would think about it. What do you guys think?

You might can go a tad more than the concensus. You do know all the story of the car: who bought it, when, and where. The story will help you sell it when you complete the work it needs.

This lady just needs a little education from a guy who knows what he's talking about rather than children who don't know the meaning of 20 footer.

I say any car that runs and drives is worth at least $500.00,,, this one sounds on the least side. Let her advertise it and get all the the people that want to see a 1 owner 23k car, once they look at it, they will walk away. Then maybe she will come to realize it isnt worth much. Then again, some idiot will give her $1000.00 and her kids will inherit it.

$300 to $400 sounds like a fair price. What her kids don't take into consideration is how much would have to go into it in order to get it in good shape again. Any more than that and she could just sit on it until she and the kids realize they won't get any more than that. If it's worth getting, sometimes it's better to play another game: The Waiting Game.

Strictly sounds like a parts car to me Craig...heck, I have a 71 V8 Grabber (complete car) I'm either going to part out or sell for way less than what she wants for that one...just has lots of rust. I say $500 is definitely tops.

    Craig-

I drove my '72 V8 Maverick away for $200.00 and the torque boxes are just fine.
Also when I got it, the interior was in great shape.

Offer her $500 and when she refuses leave her your card again. What the heck, it worked once...

You guys were thinking about what I was thinking, but a little on the high side maybe. Of course, I saw the car...and you are only going off my desciption.

I'm gonna play the waiting game. I have waited them out before. I usually end up buying it "from the guy that buys it from her" after he either:

    A. wrecks it

    B. realizes it need more parts than he can afford

    c. it gets impounded by the city and I get it from the impound yard (that is always my favorite scenario)
