Well, we are making progress on the repairs on the 76'Maverick. After cutting off the old quarter panel we found the inner quarter was shot. Damn that rust! A few days later and it now looks like an inner panel again. Just a few more patches to make here and there and we can finish it off and hang the quarter panel. Unfourtunately that's about as far as we are going to get with it. We have another job coming in, so the old Maverick will get pushed out the door and covered up for a while. Looks like I'll driving the truck a WHOLE lot longer than I thought.
can you do mine next? :bananaman my inner quarter looks about as bad as that was.. as for the outer its probably worse then yours was.. excellent work by the way, are you going to finnish the resto on it or keep it a driver?
In that second picture, do you put a coat of that glass reinforced filler to smooth it out or is it still all metal?
Nice job , well done. I hope to see more pics of the quarter panel installation and the finished job . I am sure it will look really nice ! Richard
Hey Jean...does anything ever go smoothly for you guys or do you always subscribe to Murphy's Laws? The repair is looking good.
Thanks for the encouragement guys. This was a repair job that back-fired big time. In the second photo what you are seeing is all metal. Because so much was rusted away, it took more than one patch to build it back out .In the third picture the patches were ground down and a coat of fiberglass smoothed over the repairs to shape them out. My husband did the repair work on this. He has a heck of a lot more expeiriance with metal work than I do. This car has so many water leaks from the rust that it should have come with a life preserver. Our original plan was to restore it and retire it to show car duties. Might be a while for that idea. As for Murphy's Law Wes, we live by Dale's and Jean's Law: The deeper the pile gets, the further into the middle of it we get. Sooner or later something good grows from it.
The quarter is on! It's only held on with a few tac-welds right now but it fits like a glove. You just can't beat the old factory quarters. If it was not for the Roadrunner behind me I would have gotten a better picture. That is about as far as we can go right now. We have to move the Dodge out and the Maverick over to the other stall to make room for a 64' Galaxy coming in today. We will get the Maverick done; I just don't know when.
and did all this with the rear bumper on." that's what i am talking about". a sweet job...frank...:bananaman :bananaman
Nice work, and thanks for posting the progress, very interesting. Also is comforting to see that what always happens to me does indeed happen to others. I think this post is exactly what keeps most sane people from attempting bodywork. One thing I know for sure on old cars and bodywork. You really never know how bad they are until you tear them apart. Dan
