I just got an instrument panel from the junkyard for my 77' maverick but for some reason it keeps blowing fuses when i plug in the lights. Anyone know why this is? Plus the clip that holds the spedometer cable in is broken. Any ideas on how to make it stay in, if it wont without it?

well obviously something is shorting out instantly. make sure the cluster will work in your car. was there any differences between your old cluster and new one? anything look strange?...

What did it come out of? There was some major changes year to year.

I am pretty sure my step dad(who found it) said that it was a 73'. But i didnt think that 73's would even work in a 77'. The gas gauge is working, kinda, and we put the old spedometer on it instead of the new one. The gas gauge says i have anywhere between a half of a tank and three quarters of a tank when i put so much gas in it it came out of the hole. Also the brake and engine lights and al of those under the gas gauge works, i just need the light that enable you to see it at night.

i would say that it is the wrong year ... take it out, offer it up for sale on the forum in the for sale area, and look for another... or ask if anyone has one to trade or for sale

but from the sounds of it... it isnt going to work, so dont bother

Sounds like you have a short in the instrument panel lights. If all the idoit lights are working right, and the gas gauge is somewhat right, that's about all it could be. It could be a bad headlight switch, a cut in a wire grounding out, or a light plug grounding out. Try unpluging the light switch and hooking up the panel. If it doesn't blow a fuse, I d replace the light switch first. If it still blows a fuse, check all the wiring, there was a wire that ran down to the radio for lights, and if it is a factory floorshift, there will be a wire running to the shifter, too.
