If you guys have been reading anything I put up on these forums then you know that I am desperate for a Comet GT to restore that is ready to drive but doesnt look so hot and also one that is close enough for me to get to. This question is dumb as hell but I figured since I know nothing about restoring Comets that i would ask it. I found a 1973 Comet 4 door for sale 20 miles from me. It has 70,000 original miles and is supposed to be in great shape. Here goes my dumb question. Is it at all possible without major amounts of work to convert a 4 door comet into a Comet GT without me pulling all my hair out? See I know it's dumb but go easy on me...I have no idea about restoring Comets and it's late.
I know it sounds insane but Louisiana seems to be like a dry state when it comes to Comet's for sale... At least for ones in my price range. BTW if anyone is interested in it I might be able to drive out and take pictures of it. They want $1800 for it but I haven't called them about it yet.
It wouldn't take much to get mine running ('73GT) but you asked for one already running, so, I wish you luck.
Yeah the problem I seem to be having is that the transportation of a vehicle because of gas prices is gonna kill me. Well over $1000 right now. I even looked into renting a Uhaul with a car trailer but that is over $1000 too. If I could fly into a location close enough for me to drive it back then I'd be all set. Maybe I can buy that 4 door and try to lie to my dad and tell him it's a Comet GT 4 door...
The hunt has just begun here so keep your fingers crossed, someone may have something. Keep us posted on your results.
I will definately keep everyone up to date on my progress. I have had many members helping me out which is awesome but the shipping costs are what is getting me. I just can't see paying over $1000 when I can fly in and drive one back. I have enough frequent flier miles to fly somewhere for free if the car was driveable back.
It's not running and hasen't for sometime cause it's a project I have had for a verry long time. I just keep putting money and time into it and it is soon coming together. The engine and trans are done, the suspension is done (I think, haha), exhaust is done. Need some interior stuff and a posi rear and some paint etc... Ok so I got a ways to go, but not untill lately have I gotten more serious with it.
One other thing slowing me down now is that I am fixing to buy a 72GT without M/T and there goes some cash. I think i'm getting a habbit coming here.
Man Georgia must be a goldmine when it comes to Comets. All you guys seem to pick em up easy. And the habit is just starting with me but I definately have it. ....hmm Georgia is within driving distance of me too.
To make a GT out of a 4 door you would have to turn it into a 2 door. That would require replaceing the roof, shortening the floor board area and doing some major reworking and basically grafting the whole rear of a 2 door on. It would be very hard, if not impossible. I would get a Maverick and weld a Comet tail panel in it before even remotely considering doing something like that.
Lol...I figured it was a major undertaking but it is so close to my house that I figured it would be funny to ask anyway. I'm gonna have to move to georgia I think where all the Comet GT's are hiding from me... Im gonna go post this 4 door in the classifieds section here too..maybe someone is interested.
Be patient & expand your search. There are a lot of places you can search & you may be already such as Cars.com, CollectorCarTraderOnline.com, of course Ebay & your local classifieds & I'm sure there are several that I left out. Out of curiosity I just typed in Comet GT on Internet search & turned up this page with this 72 GT for sale. Good luck in your search. http://www.carmemories.com/cmem/Ford/Lincoln+Mercury/Comet+GT
