Hi everyone. I need some advice. I have a 63 comet with a 302, 4sp. toploader, with a 3:50 rear. My third member went south on me and I am looking at a third member from a 72 mustang. Here's what I need help on--the guy says it is a 2:70 or a 3:00 and what I need to know is, if it's a 3:00 will I lose a lot of low end torque compared to my 3:50? Also how high a ratio should I look for and what should I not even consider? Any help will be appreciated.

You will notice a difference between 3.00 and 3.50. Personally I wouldn't go over 3.50 if you do much highway driving. If mostly low speed driving a 3.89 is nice, or if your'e gonna step up to an overdrive trans someday..

what do you use the car for? racing, street driving, both just go to car shows.
how much feeway driving do you do?
does your 3.50 diff have a posi?
what exactly went wrong with it?

With the 3.00 it will feel like you started off in 2ed gear. I did have a 3.70 in my Falcon and was doing a lot of highway driving. I swapped to a 3.00 and changed back to the 3.70 the following weekend. I don't know what roads you have around your area but here in Georgia we have a lot of hills to climb from a dead stop. I had to ride the clutch with the 3.00 to get rolling. If you have flat roads you will be alright. Short tire height, under 25", will help you get rolling easier.
