OK, I have found and original 71 grabber... here is the stats The bad crappy repaint minor pit rust on surface passenger floor is rotted, cowl is problem, leaves and a fist full of rust was found when I removed the kick panel, reached up and found plenty of rust. rest of the floor pan looks ok. This means major work to repair the cowl area front and rear window leaks some, owner says he had the seals replaced 6 years ago. headliner seam is ripped over the front seats dash has minor surface rust door panels need redone radio and plate are missing...but i think he said he had them The Good One owner 302 A/C seems to be all original buckets Floor shifter, seen better days has perfect grabber hood seats look great Has the sport lamps with switch on dash NAME YOUR PRICE well I couldnt get him to price it so I took cash with me today to see If i could get him to sale. I started out with 3K then 4K then he said I'll take 6K for it since you want it and want to fix it and keep it. I said that was a little more than I planed for since it had to have some major rust repair done asked if he would take 4500 he said that to him 6K was what he figures would be the least he would take. Ok now for the hard part, Is it worth 6K. Fire away Robert
are you kidding?.... its always hard to judge without seeing the car, but from your descripition theres no way in Hell I'd give that much money for what sounds like a car needing a lot of work. sounds like a $1500. car to me. but, its your money
or better yet, RUN away. Sounds like he'll never come close to what the going rate is. It will also rot to the ground over the years because of his delusion of what the car is worth (enter quote here: "A car is worth ONLY as much as someone is willing to pay for it - NOTHING more.")
Robert, I thought you were pretty high at $3000 on the initial offer. BUT as I've said before I guess it all comes down to how bad you want it and how long do you want to keep looking for another one. Grabber cars with a V8, floor shift w/bucket seats and A/C are rare for 1971 (or any other years for that matter). If you are sick of looking and you really like it - buy it. They make more money every day at the US mint - but there are only so many real grabbers with those options to be found. They are not making any more of them. But I would really work hard on him to stay well below the $6000 -
I agree on the price being too high, my last offer was for 4500, and that made my "OH SH*& what did I just do" alarm go off. if he would have taken 3k for the car I would have gladly gave it to him. But he has my # he can call me. he is 76 and on O2...he might kick the bucket next week or 10 years, then the family will sell it. hope that keep my number...by then it will be worth 1,000. Robert
dont get blinded by desire and pay too much for a sub-standard car. they are out there, dont buy the 1st one( or two) that come along just because its convieniant.
A leaking cowl might be a PITA but it sounds like this is the only real problem worth considering .... everything else Robert mentioned, bad paint, headliner, surface rust, is all fairly minor in the grand scheme of restorations. I have bought every single one of the 1971 Grabbers with a factory V8, floor shifter, buckets seats, and A/C that I have found no matter what the price or condition was .............. and you know how many I have? NONE - I have never seen one "in the wild" Rare car and it deserves some thought ..... at least some pictures please! "It's only money - you'll make more tomorrow"
