My 71 Mercury Comet GT 4dr is in the shop. It's in there because my distributor is getting swapped out for an electronic one. That's not an issue. I also decided to get the fuel gauge fixed. I did most of the trouble shooting and found the fuel tank sending unit is bad. My mecanic agreed. So we cannot find the replacement part. I looked at Rock Auto parts and Shop 1A Auto and they don't have the part. My mechanic also did a junkyard search but can't find the same model car. Can anyone tell me where I could find such a part? Also the clock spring needs to be replaced. I guess the clock spring is part of the turning signal control lever. My turning signals were not working on the back because of this clock spring. Any clues?
You are going to have a long wait for the fuel sender from autokraters. I ordered mine for the 72 back in Augest and its on back order. I called them last week and they said the manufactor is haveing problems getting one part. They said it will have it done by spring. Thats is the only company the makes them.
Never heard of a clock spring, except for inside a clock. There certainly isn't anything like that in your turn signal circuit.
I ordered a sending unit from autokrafters in early 2005, and was promptly told it was placed on back order. Some time in 2006, I canceled the order.
No clock spring in a Maverick. My 94 F150 needs one though ... AIR BAG warning light blinks continuously and my cruise control doesn't work ...
Well I do have a mercury comet 4 door with a GT package 1971. Sorry if you never heard of it. That's what it says on my title anyway. I know for sure that it is a 4 door 1971 mercury comet though and it's a great piece of machinery. As for the clockspring fellas sorry that's what the mechanic told me. We got on the phone with Restoration Parts Source and ordered a Turning signal assembly that goes on the steering column. I guess the assembly was bad. Again thank you for your advice and comments.
I would order a report from Marti. If you do have a 4 door with the GT package, it would probably be a one of a kind and that would prove it. http://www.martiauto.com/
Have Pictures? I doubt Mercury made a 1 off 4-dr GT ... and also had a custom stripe package made for it since the standard 2-door stripe would not work ....
Thanks Mavaholic I'll get in touch with Marti and as far as pictures I'll take some as soon as I can. I swear. As soon as I get the picture taken I will put it up. I am dying to know what my car really is. Thanks again for the interest and help. But now that we're on the subject what makes a car GT?
Several things...and not much. The GT was introduced in the '71 model year as the performance image mate to the Grabber Maverick. I could go on here with history about how real engine performance was dead....tape stripe hot rods etc....but most know that story. The GT was an 'appearance package'. Under the hood was the same 302 2V carbed V8 or I-6 engine that was available in any other Comet. Tranny choices were the same also, 3 spd. auto or manual only. Single exhaust only-except for some special DEALER ADDED side pipes in promotional packages. I have heard of standard dual pipes added at dealerships back in the early 70's. The GT 'appearance package' on Comets had the following as 'standard' equipment. 1-Black out treatment on the hood(stripe around/in front of non-functional scoop), front grill and rear tail panel 2-'Racing stripes' down the sides at the upper edge of the body line with 'COMET GT' cut into the stripe. 3-Dual sport mirrors-typically body color 4-High back bucket seats 5-Deluxe interior-upholstery and door panels 6-previous mentioned non-functioning hood scoop borrowed from the Cougar and Cyclone of the late 60's. All else was available on non-GT Comets: floor shift or column, manual or A/T shift, forged aluminum wheels (1973-1975), deluxe hubcaps-all years, or dog dish and trim rings('71-'73). As Dennis stated, a Marti Report would tell you what you have. Welcome to the board. Seth
Please don't think that I am throwing stones...I really am not. But all the GT's that I have seen do not have 'GT' anywhere in the title. Since it was an 'appearance package', it did not change the model of the vehicle. Perhaps you have a replacement title that a DMV office added 'GT' on when updating the registration? Interesting! Seth
Seth, Thank you for the knowledge and you were right it does not have GT in the title. I found my 1971 Merc in a dirt parking lot and honestly the GT label is on the sides of my car. That of course does not mean that it is a GT. Also the GT logo is stenciled into the body as well. I was told from the previous owner that it was a GT. Anyway So I have requested a report from Marti and that should clear up a lot of confusion. I'll be sure to keep you posted!! and I promise I will throw a pic up within the week and everyone can see how cool my Merc is. GT or not!! Thanks man. I love this Forum!!
