After being a mustang freak for years, I finally gave in and bought a 73 mav 2 door. I've been wanting one for years. Has complete 302 / c4 drivetrain, needs some cosmetic work, doesn't run. $250, I figured it was a deal. General questions I have: Can I put a 1970 bumper straight on a 73 ? do I need to change the grille or the valance to make it look correct ? Will a 69 mustang 9" rearennd bolt right in it ? Length different ? Spring perches in different locations ? Will a windsor fit between the shock towers ? I also spotted a grabber on the backstreets about a year ago...... still there this morning, gonna check it out.
1) I thought the '70 and '73 bumpers where the same. 2) There's a great thread on what rears are bolt ins and which ones need to be modified. I'll try to dig it up. 3) Short deck windsor motors fit no problem (289, 302, etc). Tall deck engines require you to either hammer the piss out of the shock towers, or cut and weld to make room. The Boss 302 and all other cleveland engines also requires shock tower modification. 4) The more mavericks the better!!
Good rear end thread. Go to page 2 for the quick answer to your swap question. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=18466&page=2&pp=20
welcome to the board. where are you from? if the engine is in decent shape you could build either a 331 od 347 stroker and haul a$$.
'73 Bumper is larger and has larger mounts. Valence is a little different for '73 but will work. The piece between the grill and bumper is different. Grill is the same. '67/8 and '69/70 rears in Mustangs were both wider than the Maverick/Comet rears. '65/'66 rear is perfect swap. Some have done it-depends on what backspacing your wheels have I suppose but they are wider. 351W is generally something that requires clearancing on the shock towers if you like changing spark plugs and dislike custom made headers. Good luck on your project-welcome to the board. Check out www.maverickcometclub.org Seth
ask anything.. most likely someone on here has done it... or heard about it... good luck on the project(s)...
Welcome to the board, JMO but I think the 73 bumper looks just as good or better than the 70-72 Bumper, so if it's a 73 I would leave it as such.
