How to tell if it's a real Comet GT?

A Comet GT has been brought to my attention and I am talking with the owner about it. I want to know if there is a good way to tell if it's a real GT by looking at it. Yes, I know, the mirrors, scoop, blacked out grill/taillight panel, stripes, etc... but what, if anything, can I look at and make sure? Attached are some pics. The interior has been redone with the Mustang upholstery, so I can't really look at that. I have the vin number, but unlike the Grabber the GT doesn't have its own code, so that's no help. The stripes on this car are not the originals, looks like the ones in this pic here: http://www.graphic-express.com/ford_maverick.htm . This car is a 302/stick on the floor car, but the engine/trans are not included with the car. It is pretty rust free, but has the typical rust in the rear quarters, not too bad. This looks like a GT to me, but the different stripes are throwing me off, and I am thinking that perhaps someone made a clone?? I don't know. Also, what color is that? It looks original. I've never seen it before. What would be a good price for this car in the condition it's in with no trans/engine? Thanks for all opinions/help!

Looks like the real deal (does it matter?) I see the grill has the metal cross bars, whats the price on this car? Why does it come without engine and tranny?

Good sign that it has a Comet GT Grill ... only a Marti Report will be 100% sure .. unless of course he has a Build Sheet or Original Invoice ..

    Hi Tom!
To me it matters. Not to offend the Comet owners on the board, but the only Comet I want is a GT. It is also a pretty long drive from my house, and I would hate to get there and have it not be what I thought it was. I haven't gotten a price from the owner yet, as we just started talking about it earlier today. He recently bought the car himself, and I am assuming that the engine/trans are going into another project he has.

I concur ... I would only want a Comet if it were a GT .. No offense ..

Lots can happen to these cars in the long years since they first arrived. I would bet that car is original. No, this is not a sure bet. Just my hunch that the car is not a piece of parts.

Looks like a GT to me. As for the stripes, back in the 80's and early 90's,
you could not find GT stripes at dealers and they weren't reproduced until
the last 10-12 yrs. in mass to my knowledge. There may have been someone
making copy stripes, but this car was probably painted in the 80's when you
would have had a hard time finding original style stripes.

Oh, and as a Comet owner, no offense taken, since mine is a GT. I wouldn't
have a Maverick either unless it was a Grabber. Or a Sprint. Or a Stallion!
    Damn, you guys are lucky!

Here is another pic of the inside. Looking at this pictures and the picture of the rear with the trunk open, I can see that the bracing and floorboards look to be the original color, which is different.. Looks like some sort of green? Anyway, I am asking the owner for the paint code and more details about the car. I hope he has some original documentation or something like that... We'll see.. Too bad this thing is just far enough away or I would go there and check it out. Where it is is too far away to drive to and not bring it home.

Somewhere I heard that the GT had the fatter sway bar as part of the package - is it true? If so, that would be a good "tell" as most clones would have a small bar.

Anyway, it looks like a nice project starter.

Hard to be sure but i would say because of the grille its a GT. Looks like a decent looking car too.

Since the carpets are out ask him for a picture of the floor pan where the front of the inside seat track bolts to the floor. If there is a reinforcement there then it came with factory buckets ... another sign of it being a GT ... if no reinforment it may have been a bench seat car .. I think trim codes will also tell you if it had buckets ..

Wouldn't the V.I.N. answer the question? I know that Grabbers are designated as such in the V.I.N. ...

I wish that were the case, but unfortunatly the Comet GT body vin code is the same as a standard Comet.
