I recently found a tachometer that looks like it came out of an older MG. It's in good shape and I'm sure it works, but I've never hooked up a tachometer before. It has two metal prongs on the back, kind of like a speaker, I guess to hook up some wires with connectors, and it also has a metal post sticking out of it that looks like a wire may connect to it. Any idea at all how to hook up a tachometer? Any suggestions welcome.

If the post you talking about is in the center and its kinda big, like a speedometer hook up, it is probably a mechanical unit and unusable for these cars. If it is an electrical connection, Then more than likely you have a ground, a switched 12v, and a line that would come from the neg side of the coil. I dont know much about MG's but I believe most were 4 cylinder cars. Unless there is a switch to select the number of cylinders, even if you got it working, it would not be accurate.

Depending on the year, it may be a positive ground car, also. Won't work in a Mav.

Even if you did get it attached ... Did the MG have a 6-cylinder engine? If it didn't the tach would not be accurate. Non-mechanical Tachs have 3 connections: 12V+, 12V- and the - side of the Coil ....
