I'd like to find out before I put my coil springs back in...got the 90 degree grease fittings installed and my new control arms in...is there going to be enough clearance between the fittings and the shock towers to be able to grease the bushings? The forward side (pic 1) doesn't look too bad but the rearward side (second pic) is pretty tight.
grease fittings i took a hole saw and drilled a 1" hole in the spring tower and changed to straight fittings so I could grease from under the hood , just another way
kinda late but make sure the shaft is centered in the control arm. I don't even know if you can tell with them on the car, but i have the same problem.
I did the same thing as Ron on all of my Mavs. I think it's the best way. You can just get a rubber plug to pop in the hole and it looks great.
There used to be a kit available that had a 2 piece fitting and a special wrench to install them while on the car. The fitting was a 90 degree fitting but the leg was about an inch long which gave the added clearance needed. Check in the Help/Motromite section of the part store.
OK, a lotta options there, thanks guys. I've considered cutting holes with a hole saw as a last resort if necessary. I've also seen the low-profile fittings maverick1970 mentioned on the Autokrafters website. I'll have a look and see if I can find them anywhere locally. If anyone has any other suggestions no one else has thought of I'll take 'em. Thanks.
want find these fittings local...they are special...a/k...or mustang supply house...i put them on my car, best to do with spring out but can be done fully assy...frank...
what Zerk, oh THAT one. when i had the front disc conversion done on my mav (71 2dr) the shop put on what looks to be the same zerks on upper control arm. I can get at mine, not easily, but am using "1/2 size" grease gun. could ya turn the fitting in just a bit more, or to a better angle. (ya like there is such a thing) IMO this is a worthwhile mod and any one with the frontend torn down should do it. mine used to squeak up a storm when the suspension moved even a hair, these grease zerks fixed her right up. have ya tried to get a gun on those yet. my gut tells me that ya can get a gun on that one well enough to do the job. I think the actuall zerk fitting unscews from the 90deg elbow, could ya make an extension to go between the fitting and the elbow? could you grind a flat side on a spare grease gun end? just a second thought.
Aeon, I haven't got a grease gun handy and haven't had a chance yet to go shopping for one. I was sort of hoping there might be a "thin wall" version out there, kind of like a thin wall socket. Is that the basic concept of your "1/2 size" gun? You're right, the zerk does unscrew from the elbow, might be a possible solution there. I hadn't thought of grinding down the side on the end of the gun either. Now that's what I call thinking outside of the box! Thanks a bunch! :bananaman
Bushing kit I used a bushing kit on mine available from Moog as a problem solver(K8233). Its just like youd find on a late 70's Granada. This is OK for the street, helps cushion the road noise, but keep the shafts if you want performance......
actually i'm matt, my car is aeon. call me either. we like to think outside the box. anywho, i don't have a full size gun to compare to but i think the 1/2 size is ""thin wall"" and the long flexxy tube makes it very manuverable. if ya do grind the end of the nozzle get a spare incase it doesn't work, i've never done it but it seems like id work. all i know is mine looks just as tight but the 1/2 size gun with about 12" flex tube fits.
