My "how cheap can I do it" project. HAHAHAHAHAHA ha ha?:biglaugh:
I knew the motor was going to be my downfall.

66 289 junkyard $200 Std bore, looks like it was never opened
Holley 700cfm DP $200 Supposed to be new
New Gt40p ported heads $500 Aftermarket springs already
    Stealth intake $145 "Like new"
Cam and timing set $150 new
    Pistons $475 new
Machine work $500 (guess, which will be low of course)
Roller lifters $165 new, ebay, saved about $50
    302 bell housing $40 junkyard

    Subtotal $2375
That includes all shipping and tax. And I did actually get good deals on most of the stuff.
Then have to add gaskets, seals, bearings, mounts, and what ever, just to get the motor built and in.
Then ignition, and exhaust. I can get a radiator off a junk 302 car. All going in my "cheap" $300 car. And the other "cheap" $350 car that's going to donate the running gear to the '70.
One big snowball in Arizona in the summer time!!! But what's the use of having a nice light hotrod that won't go fast?

There is one thing I have learned when it comes to cars....there ain't no such thing as a cheap 'snowball'. Once that snowball starts growing in size, your wallet starts shrinking in size.

My rule of thumb is: "It'll cost twice as much and take three times as long as you estimate". And that usually ends up being pretty accurrate, at least for me.:D

    Still comparatively cheap.

If I end up near 400 crank hp, I figure it's still a pretty good deal. Rebuilt the 292 in my '57 about 15 years ago, did absolutely nothing but keep it stock, even went to the smaller valve heads, and it still cost me 2000 in parts so I'm ok with the costs on this, big part of the reason I went ahead and got all the stuff. Gotta have some stupid fun once in a while.

400 hp out of a 289 w/iron heads? Better have a really big cam and wind the crap out of it.

    Yeah.

Moderately big cam and I'm at least going to wind a good fart out of it. Did say close. And crank. It was done to a 302 with about what I'm doing and reworked 289 iron heads, same cam, 6500 rpm power peak, 9.5:1 cr. I should have more flow and more compression. Dyno will tell. My only big concern is doing it with domes instead of flattops, but at least they are big, wide, flat domes.
