Some times when you hit the key you just hear the starter spin up but no engagement. If you release the key, it will spin down, kinda clunk, and then it starts fine on the next key hit. Is it just the bendix sticking? Is it gonna hurt anything for it to do this? And something else i was wondering, how hard are the starters to remove? stock motor stock exaust.. later!! chris
Hi Chris, You are correct in the problem being the bendix (starter drive). It's not actually sticking though. It's just worn out and actually slipping. It's going to get worse and will eventually leave you stranded if you don't fix it soon. You can replace the bendix fairly easy but it may be almost as cheap to replace the entire starter as they are very inexpensive at most parts houses. The starter on these cars is also fairly easy to change out. There is only one battery cable attached and two bolts holding it on. I say tackle that baby before she strands you.
Yes, the longer you wait, the more damage to the flexplate and it's a whole lot easier to replace starter than the starter and flywheel!
