I woke up last night with an idea in my head about a home-made shaker scoop. I want to put it on my Maverick (250.)

I've got some plans drawn up (that I did at 3 AM) but was wondering if it had been done before. I'm figuring I can do it pretty cheap with some sheet metal and a cheapo fiberglass scoop.

I really just want something that I can attach to the top of the air cleaner that pops just right out of the hood -- I know it will take some tinkering but I'm looking at it and I'm pretty sure I can do the setup for less than $150.

Just tossing an idea out there to kick around.

My hood already shakes when I drive, why would I need to put on a shaking scoop?:D

    Not as bad as mine.

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind seeing some pics. Show us what you have in mind(y)

I'll see if I can get a scanner and at least give a general idea of what I'm going for.

My only problem right now is clamps, I can't find exactly what I'm looking for and I don't know how to describe it..

All right, I went ahead and mocked something up in paint (I'm at work, so nothin' fancy.)

    Couple thoughts..

1.) What should hold the scoop unit to the air cleaner?
2.) What cleaner element should be used? I'm thinking the K&N open-top would probably be best, at least the easiest to assemble.

Let me know what you think.

Edit: Another thought I had last night: to give it that real "home-made" look, I was thinking about just running a wingnut all the way from the top of the scoop assembly down to the carburetor. Suggestions still very much appreciated.

YEP, I was just going to suggest the wingnut through the middle (at least to the middle of the lower part, not through the top of the scoop)

Well, the reason I was thinking about going all the way through was so that the entire thing could be built as one big air cleaner, saving me a lot of hassle.

Going through the center (not through the scoop) means one of two things:

1.) I'll have to get the scoop unit to somehow attach to the air cleaner through non-permanent means OR
2.) I'll have to attach the bottom portion of the scoop unit permanently to the air cleaner, and just use 4-6 bolts to attach the scoop to the base.

Option #1 is the best, but also the most difficult to fab up - and I don't even have a shop to work in. Option #2 is the easiest to assemble, but will be a pain in the ass when I need to actually remove the whole thing.

    I guess there's option #3..

3.) Get a scoop with a big enough entrance that I could fit my hand in there and undo the wingnut.

Anyone wanna donate a scoop that I could work with? :)

Worked up another idea. This is option #1.

    Items are marked as:

    1.) Scoop
    2.) Base plate
    3.) Air cleaner base
4.) "Magic" clamp - still pondering on this
    5.) Wing nut

Shaker scoops are attached to the carburetor - not the hood. They just come up through the hood and shake with the engine.

    I'm well aware.

Did I say so otherwise? :hmmm:

The picture on your post (#7 and #11) looks like it attaches to the hood.... I suppose appearances can be deceiving.

Well, I live in Arizona, so I'm not too worried, but I'm waiting till I acquire a scoop before I start looking how to make a plug for it. I'm also studying some "real" shakers to see how they redirect water when it gets in.
