So i lost the bid on the carb i wanted when it shot over 300.00... ugh just curoius, what's the good and bad about the holley 1850? would it be a suitable carb for a mav? Someone who knows holleys is bound to know!
Nothing wrong with a 1850 holley. If i was to buy off ebay this is the guy i would buy from he seems to really know carbs and will offer tuning advise. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Reman-1850-Holle...tcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Buy new, Dont fool with somthing that someone else maybe two or three have had their hands on. A new 1850 with electric choke is not that high. Also has a pretty good warranty if you buy from say Autozone.
Good little used 1850's can be had for less than $100 on ebay all the time. Steer clear of the one's that have obviously old finishes. New 1850's are up to about $250 now. I just bought a little used 570 Street Avenger there for less than $130 shipped. All you have to do is be patient and carefully choose the carbs you bid on. That SA 570 went on with nothing more than a new powervalve. I never buy new now. I just pickup the one's from the guys who bad mouth Holleys, then give up on them for Edelbrocks. Before the 570, I picked up little used 3310 750 Holley for $150, and put a $20 kit in it. Ran it for well over a year then sold it for $110. Did an 1850 600 the same way before that. Paid $125, bought a worn 3310 for the fuel bowls($50), swapped the bowls, changed the secondary spring kitted ($20)and tuned it for the roller 5.0 it went on.
Yea i usually do the same, the 700 dp i have right now i got out of a friends garbage can! He put a kit in it and coulden't get it to work i pulled it apart and found that it had 2 power valve gaskets in it.It really p.o'd him when i drove my truck over to his place that night with it on.
The 3310 750 I bought was run without an inline fuel filter. The primary "rock" filter inside the bowl inlet was plugged solid with what looked like red mud. The secondary side was clean as a whistle, which told me the previous owner never bothered to take the time to tune the carb, the secondaries had rarely if ever been opened up. I love these guys who don't take the time to learn a part or its operation.
The 1850 is good for mild applications. When looking at Holleys, you just have to make sure you get something from the last 10 years or so. That way you have umbrella type accel pumps and power valve protection. Both very good things to have. I would shoot for a used Street Avenger myself. Those have all the bells and whistles when it comes to Holley parts. I run an ancient 1850 right now and it runs great. I intend to go with something new soon though... I want the 2 features I mentioned. The umbrella valve gives better throttle response. Always toss the bronze filters in the bowl inlets. Just make sure you use a remote filter.
