Hmmm, maybe I need to be educated about this but I do believe the hole at the top is going to make a nice oily mess on top of the timing chain casting area, unless you are saying that is a place that they normally break.
That's the way they're made. Check out these pics of a new, never used block. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?p=840822#post840822
Yes, you need to be educated. All 302 blocks have both holes punched in em. Since when is the timing chain run dry ? (no oil = chain that doesn't last very long)
Believe it or not they are factory. You wouldnt think so would you. Dont feel foolish for asking they are very crude holes to say the least.
That motor looks like it's been open to the weather, and what the hell happened to the timing cover?? It's probably not one to consider buying.
I looked at the pic and it looked like the top hole was open to the outside of engine and not going back into block just an optical illusion to me I guess, after looking at bm,s block earlier I knew I had stuck my foot in my mouth Of course I know that the timing chain get oil, its not my first rodeo.
I've seen some worse that turned out to be good cores for rebuilds. Seen some that looked better that didn't. Like the 97 Exploder 5.0 block I spent two days on before cleaning the graphite gaskets off the decks and finding cracks. The timing cover is also what seems to be a common problem with the Explorer 5.0's, the long pump bolts apparently do not get thread sealer, then seep coolant and the bolts rust to the aluminum cover, the carnage in that pic is what happens when someone comes along and gets rough with the cover trying to remove it. The Explorer block I just tossed in the scrap pile also had a rusty bolt in the cover. Heard of others this way too.
I am thinking of buying, the cylinders are free of wear and I have GT40 heads, I take it to the machine shop for inspection. Can I use my timming set, water pump, and front cover?
Yes, you can use those parts on it. Do a careful visual inspection before handing over your money for it. If the heads are on it, pull em, also remove the oilpan and check out the bottomend.
