I drove up to Buford today to Dairy Queen for lunch, ran about 65 mph up I-85/I-985 for about 6 miles maybe.

Got lunch, ate, drove about a mile and stopped and got gas. After I got gas I started hearing a slight "ticking" which I kinda thought was just a lifter or something, because something in there makes a little ticking noise on cold mornings sometimes when I first start it up. Drove about 2 more miles with this ticking noise (it wasn't bad at all, could barely hear it) got to the interstate and started acclerating to get on and the noise started getting worse and worse.

When I got up to about 60, I backed out of the gas and just held it about 1/4th of the way down and crusied along and the noise went away mostly.

I went out and recorded the sound its makeing. It only does it if you push the gas more then a quarter of the way down. I took the valve cover off and checked the torque on the bolts, and everything is still seems fine under there.

This engine is driving me into the ground. I'm about ready to yank it out of there. Seems like everytime something happens, I fix it and get about 400 miles out of it before something else happens. The sound clip is about 1.7 MB. http://5hp.hill.cc/tick.avi

Might be something wrong with my real player...dont know......But from what you describe, it could be the exhaust manifold...

Some of these sounds are hard to locate. But I'd say check the header/ exhust manifold bolts. Sometimes they get a bit loose. I know on a friends race car the header came a little loose and it started making a simalar sound, and after we built another motor and took the old one out we realized that when we took it out one of the header bolts was a bit loose and it was making the sound, the rest of the motor was just fine.

that was my thoughts when you were describing it also. check and make sure the exhaust manifold is tight and also any other exhaust connections. may have a warped exhaust manifold. one thing i've seen others do in that case is to double up on the gaskets. only other thing i can think of is a lifter going bad. makes a noise under power then stops when you get up to speed.:)

Yeah, sounds like an exhaust leak to me also, with the engine running without touching anything hot try running your hand around the exhaust and manifold and see if you feel any leaks, its best to do it when the engine is cool.

Ok, thanks. I took it over to my friend Brent's house who is a certfied master mechanic, and he thought it was either the alternater or the exaust manifold gasket. I pulled the fan belt off today and it was still makeing the noise, so I guess I'll pull the manifold off tomarrow and see.

Exhaust all the way. You should see it in the gasket if the gasket is bad, or it could be a cracked manifold. Also, if you have a heat riser for the choke, it could be leaking there too.

Jamie; those six cylinder manifolds have a habit of breaking on the bolt holes and around the mounting points. Look hard! The cracks tend to close up when it is cold, and open up and make noise when it gets hot. Good luck!

Jamie, take a piece of `1/4" or so gas line and hold one end to your ear, take the other end and run it all along the manifold. You can get the hose end all up under where you can't get your hand. You'll hear the difference when you run it across a leak

def sounds like an exhaust leak.... do you smell anything when driving?

i would take the manifold off and do a real good check top and bottom.....at least its easier to take off than 302 headers.....lol...

    good luck

I can't smell any exaust, but after looking hard, I can see the black where it has been blowing out the exaust on the front 2 cylinders.

It will be later this evening before I can pull it apart because it is my only vehical and I have to pick my bro up from school and take him to work first.

    Thanks for the help!

Careful on those manifold bolts, they are easy to break off! Definitely hit them with penetrating oil first. It could end up snowballing and you end up getting stuck with your car not running.
