All was great with my rebuild and I almost had a s%$t when I saw smoke coming in from the vents. I soon found out that it is a leak in the heater core. Can someone give me a step by step to remove and replace the core? Please. Do I have to take the dash off? Please be specific as I am a rookie on heat and a/c. Thanks
in my 72 w/o ac all you have to do is take out the lower dash and you can access the box and clips by the passenger feet (in mine atleast). take off the clips (flat head screwdriver makes it easier...dont loose the clips...$2.50 each lol) and take the front of the box off and you'll see your heater core...mine had some leaves in there so maybe that was your problem(leaves smoldering in the heater box) but either way i could see and reach both heater hose clamps...not sure of the differences in and a/c model but i hope this helps you get started...also, taking off the upper-lower dash connecting bracket made putting the box back in a little easier(check the inside of your cowl vents while you have it apart)..hope this helped some
Non AC cars are a piece of cake. AC cars are a royal pain in the ass. I've done them before but never bothered to write a step by step. Its a lot easier if you take out the front seat. You have to remove the package tray or lower dash, which ever you have. Then just a matter of unhooking whatever is in the way. Eventually you have to unbolt the box from the firewall and drop it down. If your ac is not charged up, you can disconnect the lines and pull the box out to a bench to split it open. If your ac is working, then its even harder to get to. Sorry I cant be much more help but its been quite a few years and I just dont remember all the details. But its not rocket science so just dig in and you can figure it out. Label everything you disconnect to easy the reassembly. You can even take pictures as you take it apart.
I got it out and replaced it tonight. Not too bad, Just took off the lower dash tray. Really did not have to take out the seat. I am glad its done. Thanks
