    Folk,

I need some help. I just bought an 80 Mustang with the 200 Six. It is a California model with all stock emissions. It has 36K original miles!

I have a rough idle and hot stalling problem.

    1. New Holley Rebuild carb (the old one was a ball of Shellac from sitting), fuel filter and seval tanks of premium run through it.
    2. New Cap, wires, rotor, coil, plugs, just because.
    3. New EGR, just because
    4. Timed to the proper setting. No spark knock.

All vacuum lines traced and OK. All broken tees replaced. All operational.

    Fuel line wrapped in insulation.

19.5-20" steady vacuum at idle and 180 PSI of compression on every cylinder.

I get a rough idle! It runs great on the road, but has a rough idle. It also seems to miss slighly while accelerating, not too bad but does.

When hot, if I shut off to go into a store for 10-15-20 minutes and come back out, it starts fine and then after 5-6 seconds stalls dead, like someone shut off the key. I am in a hot area 85+ during the day.

It restarts and runs rough for 10 seconds and then back to normal and is fine until shut off again.

Are these related? Could it be the duraspark module? It the last thing next to fuel pump pressure.

Any help is much appreciated even though it is not a Maverick, but is the decendant of one.

    Thanks,

    Norm

sounds like a vac leak somewhere

carb gasket or maybe a line somewhere. when my duraspark moduel went bad the car would just randomly die. it wasnt that predictable

but im throwing my money on a vac leak along with maybe a needed carb adjustment. just b/c its new doesnt mean it doesnt need further adjustment to work well with the motor.

fordsix.com/forums would be another good place to go for help

I have sent two requests to join the fordsix site and have no reply's. It has been over a week. That's why I posted here.

I heard you can carfully spray some carb cleaner around the vac system to see if the idle changes. I may give that a try.

My thoughs on the Ignition are: It overheats when turned off. When restarted it's hot, but the fan, air movement cools it enough to run again.

I am picking up a new Neihoff $31.00 module tonight to test and will check for vacuum leaks as well.

    Thanks for the help!

ya spray in one area at a time while shes running. if you notice a change in rpm for a moment then there was a vac leak in that spot

sometimes you can take the moduel off and see if the waxy looking plastic on the back side has melted from over heating

Mine too. Maybe a vac leak like he was saying or maybe the idle mixture screws (if there are any) are set too lean

Found a slight leak at the carb base

Replaced both the spacer and carb base gasket last night.

Got a slight speed drop when spraying carb cleaner on base of the carb.

Still seems to have a mis. Runs a little better. Bought a new duraspark module. I have not installed yet. We'll see who she drives over the next few days to see if I need it.
