Hi guys! Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on headers for a 1976 Comet with a 302 or if you can even get headers . I am looking to buy some and get my car going faster before the end of July. Also does the motor need to come out to get them in?
Hooker 6901s are the best fitting. Any long tube header will need one of two things to get them in: 1: The front of the car raised really high. Like 3' or better. OR 2: The long bolt removed on each side of the engine that retains the engine mount to the frame stand. Then the engine will need to be raised a few inches. One or the other. I find it easier to raise the engine, one side at a time, so the car doesn't need to be so high up. There are plenty of other little tricks too that help the install go smooth. When the time comes, you can either ask here, or do a search because they have been posted many times. Personally, I have typed them out in posts 3 or 4 times myself. If you have column shift auto, there are posts that describe how to mod your linkage to work with LTs. The header companies just list them as "not for column shift" to make life easy, but there is a mod. If you have column shift manual, there is no way but to go floor shift. For the auto, a cable shifter is a real nice addition and super easy. If you have power steering, you will need the 'drop bracket' that header companies sell. It runs 10-20 bux and drops your slave cylinder a little to get the tubes by. Easy... Good luck Dave
Here's a link with some info about headers that were built specifically for 691/2 to 77 Comets and Mavericks. These were also developed for the people of this community. These were built as shorties to keep ground clearance on lowered cars and still give great performance. I can say, with confidence, that all other header manufactures built there masters on another vehicle and "just happened" to fit on our cars. These are a perfect fit and are incredibly easy to install!! Some folks on here swear by the hooker 6901's, which is perfectly fine, But some have had to modify either the header or the car. Some have had great success as well. The problem is that the chassis will change over time and our cars approaching 40 yrs old. These were designed on a car two years ago and I addressed all the typical problems with shock tower sag, etc. So, in effect, these are a very new design, for a aging vehicle. Heres the link. It contains information about discounts for being a member as well as other techical information and design aspects. Enjoy...
