Fixin to score a 77 Comet tomorrow, 5.0 HO from a 89 Stang. Automatic, 8" rear. ($600)Straight rust free body. Carbed with a Performer RPM intake. They swapped the iron manifolds onto it. That's gotta go. The engine will be pulled and replaced with a 331, sixpack, Canfield heads. Looks tight in the engine bay. Wondering if the old Tri-y's fit ? Also need to replace the big ass front bumper. Will the earlier bumpers bolt up?
Hey there, I see you live in Opelousas. I live in Milton outside of Lafayette. We have a Mercury Comet. Just converted to mild 302 and used the new Doug Thorley shorty headers for this application. Had to make a zig-zag part for the driver's side but overall I'm very happy with the fit and quality. Phil
I've been using the Tri-Y's on my 89 Ranger now for years and they work well on the 331. That's why I want to stick with em. Don't want long tubes, too much hassle with other stuff under the car, been-there, done-that on a big block 67 Stang.
the maverick/comet shock towers give us a narrow area to work with, compared to a mustang. you can "notch" out the shock towers to give you some room for spark plugs and headers, but not sure what the width is on the headers you are asking about. you can wait to see if someone on here has used them, or you can get them and see if they fit. i bought Summit Headers for my maverick back when i did my 302 swap, and they didnt fit, so in the middle of putting the engine in i had to go buy a set of hooker headers from my local speed shop in tucson.... they dropped right in
The Shelby tri-Y's fit the 65-66 Stangs, Fairlanes, Falcons, and Comets, they ought to work on these cars too. Same basic engine bay, maybe a tad narrower like the 62-65 Fairlane & Falcons were. 289 Hi-po manifolds ought to work well too.
I haven't heard of anyone on here using tri-ys, could very well be wrong though. The difference between the Mustang engine bay and the Maverick is more than it looks. Also notching the spring towers don't help much, if any at all, for header clearence. Makes a world of difference for sparkplug changes though, imo. Of course if you want to modify tri-ys to fit, I'm sure you could do it.
neato,,,, will they work with a column shift? Got me thinking about g'son's car. It needs better breathing, stock exhaust manifolds. But I want to keep the column shift. Dad, your bumper question. I think there's a tech article on that.
I think for whatever reason it varies from car to car. I ordered headers from e-bay that look like copies of the Hookers everyone is using. When I got them they were in a Summit box. They fit great. Go figure. Brad
Hey D! Good to see you made it. I know you have a great deal of experience with other Fords. The thing you need to remember about interchange with Mav/Comets is that the engine bays are slightly shorter. As in the firewall is a little closer to the radiator support than other engine bays of comparable width. Early Stangs and Falcons would be about the same width. I have never heard of anyone successfully using Tri-Ys on our cars. I bought a brand new set last year and just assumed they worked because of the closeness of the 65-66 Stang to our cars. I was very happy with them, except the driver's side had conflict with the clutch linkage and pitman arm, both of which could not be overcome in my driveway. So they were abandon for an old set of 6901 Hookers I had laying. They are the tried and true for our cars. The HiPo manifolds do not fit either. I should say the passenger side does not fit. The stock driver's side is almost identical to the HiPo driver's side. The PS hits the firewall... The short bay and close firewall rears it's ugly head. Anyway, one pic is my header crushed by the pitman arm. The other shows how the 2 pipes could be rerouted to clear the pitman and clutch linkage.
Thanks, like I replied in my email, I may go to a rack & pinion steering setup anyway. I have yet to drive it, but it felt like it had a good bit of slack in the steering. Otherwise the car's in good shape for a 30 yr old. Virtually no rust, steering ram's leaking, one line is torn apart, the P.O couldn't figure out the column shifter due to the lack of a pivot on the roller block. All I've seen so far is E6SE block, E7TE heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, topped with an adapter and a Holley 500 2 bbl. They also left the Thermactor holes in the heads unplugged. Fuel pump ain't pumping, tank is full of something other than gas, from what I just heard over the phone from the seller. He had maybe $5 worth in it and I poured 3 gals in before it ran back out the filler hole. The little run time I got, pouring gas down the carb, sounded like crap with the heads unplugged. He had started a floor shifter conversion, but was trying to use a linkage without a bellcrank, so he was going to have a reverse pattern without changing the valve body. I'll get pics later. There were a couple on his want ad in craigslist (Baton Rouge La. section) In short, I'll figure out a way to fit tri-Y's. Ain't gonna fight with 4 into 1's like I did with a big block Stang.
