Okay, get all of the jacking references out of the way now, gentlemen. I hope everyone is doing fine! It's been a few months, but I have a question I wasn't able to find an answer to via searching the forums. I have a weird ticking in the engine that sounds like a lifter, but to rule out a worn camshaft, I want to pull the pan off and inspect the cams. I have two 1.5 ton jack stands. The question is, since I'm doing this in my cramped apartment garage, is about placement. Where can I install both of these stands so that I can crawl under the car, drop the pan, and still feel okay about life? Thanks everybody! Jim
place the jack/jaclstands on the frame rails by the torque boxes.you will not be able to get to the lifters/cam by removing the oil pan.intake needs to come off, along with the push rods to get to the lifters.the cam is removed by taking off the harmonic balancer, timing cover, and the radiator, and sliding the cam out the front.
when you drop the oil pan,all your going to see is main caps, and connecting rods.you'll see a glimpse or sections of the cam,but thats about it.
set down the tools and step slowly away from the vehicle.lol only way to get to the cam is from the top and front.you won't need jackstands.
If it is a v-8, locate which side the ticking is coming from. Take off that valve cover and locate which cyclinder the ticking is coming from. If that cyclinder has the same lifter travel as the others, it could be a push rod or lifter.
