The ignition switch on my car locked up on me again at a store next to my house. So I locked it up to come back for it later. Then I realized (since I just got this car and never locked the doors before) that I don't even have a key to open the door! I can't afford a locksmith and I don't want to leave my car in that parking lot for too long. How can I get past the door lock and then unlock the steering lock and start my car? Please guys I don't need any big processes, I just need to know what would be the quickest way to get into the car and get it started and unlock the steering lock. If I have to drill, cut, whatever to do it I will. Please guys the quickest and most direct answer is what I really need right now!

Your ignition key is the same as your door lock key, so use it to unlock the doors and then in the ignition. The ignition switch may seem to be locked if the steering wheel is "locked" after you turned it off. Put the key in the igintion and try to turn it on. t may seem stuck, so move the steering wheel from side to side to help unlock the wheel so the switch will move as it is supposed to. If this is not the situation you are having, let me know.

well I tried both doors and the ignition key is not unlocking either of them. As for the ignition it will not unlock no matter how much I play with the wheel. So basically I need to know how to drill out the door lock and how to drill/cut/remove the steering wheel lock.

Well, I don't know about the later ones, but my '72 was really easy to get into with a coat hanger.

ok.......and how do I use a coat hanger to get into it? I mean I can't snag the lock on the door.

Also what am I going to do about the steering wheel lock? I can hotwire my car to get it started, but if I can't move the wheel I can't get it home. This is my biggest problem is getting the steering wheel lock to disengage.

    dent jerker

find a body man with a dent jerker , turn the screw into you lock and give it a quick pop and usually out comes the key cylinder, you will then use flat blade screwdriver to start car, and you will nedd a mew lock, sounds like you neede a new one anyway,

this may sound stupid but with my key for the door/ignition one side of the key will unlock the door and that same side will not work in the ignition however the other side that doesn't work in the door works in the ignition....

My car has three keys...ign, doors and trunk. Need to get the ignition and doors the same. AutoKrafters sells the sets, so I guess that is the best solution. As far as the hangar goes, slip the hook end through the gasket in the quarter window and work your way to the door lock. Had to do that once....lots of fun. Good luck!

I managed to get into the car, so that problem is out of the way. But I need my car for work tomorrow and I'd really like to move it before tonight. I tried drilling out the ignition lock, but it is just completely frozen. I thought about changing out the ignition, but in order to remove the old ignition don't you have to put it in the ON position? Well I can't do that because my lock cylinder is frozen (and I think it is because of the steering wheel lock). And I've already broken of the metal part on the outside of the lock (where you slip the key in) from trying to beat it free with a hammer since it worked once before.

So I need to know, what should I do? What would be the easiest way for me to get the steering lock disengaged and get the car started??? Please guys I need really direct answers, this is an emergency. I mean what do I do? My ignition cylinder is just completely locked/frozen/jammed and I can't even pull my car home because the steering lock is engaged!!!

The steering wheel "lock" is a metal "nub" that comes up and sticks into one of the holes on the outside of the back of the steering wheel. If you hit the wheel hard enough in either direction, this nub has a tendency to break off to free up the wheel...you would then either have to hotwire the car or get access to the top of the column to jimmy the ignition switch.
If you have time, you can pull the steering wheel off to take care of the locking nub without risking damaging something...
You will need a steering wheel puller for this..I have seen cheap ones available at auto parts stores...

MavMark: How much do you think a steering wheel puller will cost? And do you think it I hit it hard enough it would really just break it free? Cuz I don't even want a stupid steering wheel lock in the first place, I like my cars very simple.

I mean I've never pulled a steering wheel before, how much trouble is that? Should I be able to figure out how to do it quickly?
