mine are off a 98, I think. Also on Mountaineers. Only for 3-4 years, I think. May want to look into non-P GT40 heads...just from experience...not necessarily good experience. They run very well, but are very difficult to get to the spark plugs on the driver side, and will need a spacer flange, 90* plug boots, AND $13 EACH shorty spark plugs to keep from burning through the plugs boots. Plus, you need to take the headers completely OFF to change plugs or even plug wires... But, RUNS GREAT!!!
Come on... this is what craftsman and some others are in business for. They make tools to help get around this. I will run them, maybe not in the Mav, but in my Mustang which will have the same issues. maybe I'll change my mind after I go through the experience.
The GT40s are fine, the Ps moved the spark plug angle almost straight out, which hits the header tubes on the driver side. Passenger side plugs are REALLY easy to get to.
i was told some early explorers had gt 40 heads then the last years of the 302 explorers had the gt 40 p head like 1998 99.... is this true ?????????
Passenger side... Driver side... In the bottom picture, compare it to the 2nd one...those plugs are hitting right in the very center of the header tubes...
The stock shorty headers that come on the later GT40P equipped cars may work. They are basically 4 tubes coming out and down into a collector. They may stick out from the block too far, but seem like a good place to start, maybe bend them around a bit to make them clear... The earlier ones used an iron manifold. The later ones had what appeared to be a shorty-tube (maybe stainless, the one I saw was still very silver and clean).
If I remember right, I emailed with a guy several years ago that used the special P headers on a Maverick. They didn't slide right in.
