Can anyone tell me where my ground cable would go from the battery to where on the moto,r and also is there another ground cable that would go from the motor to the chassis? This would be a for a 1971 Maverick with a V8. Thanks!
On my 1971 Grabber the neg. cable runs from the battery to just under the voltage regulator where it is clamped at a bare spot and bolted to the body, from there it runs to the engine block and is bolted there.
This is kinda long... Put it on one of the starter motor bolts (remove bolt, sand shiny, apply anti corrosion spray and replace ) to assure trouble free DC Negative. The starter motor needs the big juice so go straight to it. Also run a battery cable wire to the car body, anywhere you want. And a #14 neg to the regulator mounting screw and a #10 wire to the alternator! That way you will KNOW that they are getting good DC Neg. By the way it is not a ground, it is DC negative. AC Ground (alternating current) is a non current carrying conductor that in an emergency carries a positive short (imagine frayed toaster positive wire touching the metal housing... instead of killing you the metal case is "bonded" to a "ground" wire that leads to the dirt....ground. Nothing in DC wiring gets "grounded" and thinking of negative as being somehow a "ground" or any less equal to the positive will hurt you future diagnosis of problems.. You can put fuses in the negative wire instead of the pos wire.. that'd be unorthodox but it'd do the same thing!!!
I'm thinking you are talking...stock location. if so...I don't remember. mine has a braided strap from...starter mounting bolt to frame. a braided strap from each head to firewall. neg. cable from battery to frame. ......
On my '72, the original ground cable was attached to the front of the 302 engine block. It had a tab in the middle that I think bolted to the engine frame stand. I found a cable with a tab like that but It was too pricy so replaced the original with one with no tab in the middle and added a heavy wire from the neg post of the battery to the inner fender.
My factory ground cable is exactly the same as Moneymaker1. Neg post to a tab on the inner fender at the voltage regulator mounting, and then to the large hole(or bolt) in the right front of the engine block. You DO need a connection at the engine AND the body, preferably with the same cable.
