Grabber Sport Mirrors

Ok I bought Grabber Sport mirrors to put on my 71 Maverick but when I went to put them on the screw hole are smaller on the sport mirror then the standard mirrors. Any ideas?

Or did I just get ripped off with guy saying they were original Grabber mirrors?

The holes on sport mirrors are farther apart than standard mirrors, you will need to get what they call a nutsert and install them to fasten the mirrors on with.

Google it and you will see, you may be able to take the car to a body shop and have them install them for you

 

Might have bought mustangII mirrors, the base is shorter on those.

 

I've also seen the little threaded inserts you need referred to as a rivnut

 

I was always under the impression that the doors on the Mustang II and Maverick must be somewhat differently shaped so when a MII mirror is mounted on a Maverick/Comet the mirror head doesn't sit level but tilts to the side

 

My bad I didnt read that the holes on the mirrors you bought are closer together, probably Mustang II or Pinto.

Like Eric stated check the numbers on the mirrors and that will tell you

 

The proper way to mount a sport mirror is with rivnuts/nutserts. They can be installed without the special tool. The correct tool looks a bit like a big rivet gun.




The Mustang supply places have a rubber insert what just swells up when tightened. Personally I'd use nutserts.

If you'd rather have someone install nutserts the right way, most dealership trim guys and independent accessory shops have the installer tool and nutserts for installing roof racks on vans and SUVs. They'd probably install them for less than what to tool costs.

Eric I checked the mirros they are 6 3/4" so I'll have to double check the fit. I'll have to look into getting a nut insert tool.

Eastwood has a pretty inexpensive tool for installing the inserts, comes with several sizes of inserts. Was easy to use, so easy I loaned it out and never got it back.

 

I just did a tech article that you may find useful ... mounted the mirrors a bit further forward than my factory original position. They have a better viewing angle and match the lines of the car better.

You definitely want "Rivnuts" or "Rivet Nuts" for this. I spoke with a hardware specialist and mentioned that I have heard them called "Nutserts". He showed me the difference. Nutserts act a little more like concrete anchors, in an application where the material is about as thick as the fastener itself, and you need it to be absolutely flush with the surface. A rivnut compresses like a rivet and there is a bit of a flange on each side of the material (fine in this case, the mirror base covers it). You will want them in 10-24 thread for this application.

You can install rivnets with a very simple setup ... see detail shots in the tech article... a 10-24 hex-head capscrew, an oversize nut that the capscrew can shoulder up against, and two washers and lockwashers. Put locking pliers on the nut and apply downward pressure to keep the rivnut from turning, while tightening the capscrew with an allen wrench.

 

Thanks for posting the size so I ordered a few today. Now I need to check the part numbers on my mirrors to see if I can find some gaskets. I have no idea what they came off of. I bought them at a swap meet. I made some crappy gaskets out of an old floor mat years ago.
