Ray Parrish was behind me one night at the round-up and he told me my car was leaning to the passenger side ... I figured it was because Wayne was sitting on that side .. ... I checked when I got home and the passenger side was sitting almost 1/2 inch lower than the driver side. After much measuring and trying to figure out what was going on I discovered the problem last night. The passenger side rear wheel is sitting further back in the wheelhousing than the driver side ... about 1/2 inch or so ... When we put the car in Wayne's trailer we had the tie-down strap wrapped around the axle on the passeger side. Apparantly the axle housing slid back on the leaf spring and is now causing the right side to sag and is obviously now crooked. Gonna loosen up the U-bolts when I get a chance and get it straightened out ...
Dan the spring bolt should prevent the housing from sliding back. Might want to take it apart and make sure it isn't broken.
OK .... would there be any other reason the passenger side rear wheel is sitting back further in the wheel housing?
Not unless something was bent. On the spring itself is a centering stud/bolt like allen mention disassemble and inspect to see if it broken or missing. On the spring perch that is elded to rearend is a hole that this stud.bolt is suppose to sit in. ANother idea is loosen your rear shackle and frt eye bolts and bounce the car and then retighten. I have seen the rear bushings bind (the poly ones the most) and cause uneven conditions. Past that like I said spring lost it's arch or something is bent.......
I did look at the angle of the rear shackles. The shackles appear to be sitting at the same angle on both sides. That's why I figured the springs were in the same place and it must have been the axle that moved ... I'll take another measurement and determine if the back end of the spring is at the same point on the frame on both sides of the car ..
I know you don't drive it much, but if this had been that way for a while, you should have an odd wear pattern starting on the rear tires. The car could even look as if it's dog tracking going down the road. I would pull a tape/string from the center of the front wheel/center cap to the rear wheel centers. They should be darned close if not exact side to side if everything is square. Good luck. Seth
Hmmm. The other day I was driving my '73 Grabber with a buddy was following me. He said the car was leaning to the left. When I got to my destination and got out of the car, it looked level to me. Sitting in the driveway it looks level. Wonder why it looked like it was leaning while I was driving it?
Here is a picture of the left and right. Notice the left side easily fits the paint can cap between the 1/4 and the tire. The cap will not fit in between the 1/4 and the tire on the right side. On the front side of the tire it is just the opposite .. the can top fits in the gap on the right side but not on the left. When compared to my 74 everything is as excepted. The cap will fit between the back of the tire and the back 1/4 just fine on both sides. It will not fit between the tire and the 1/4 on the front on either side. I am 99% positive the car was sitting level prior to the round-up ...
maybe going down the track "sideways" at the round up has something to do with it .Or maybe that is why it did it ...frank...
whats it look like on the top of the tires to the opening ??? the pass side closer ?? maybe the drivers side went up ....a bad shock maybe??? or is it just shifted ??
I took the shocks out to make sure that wasn't the problem .. From the center of the wheel straight up to the 1/4 panel is about 1/2 inch shorter on the passenger side ... that is the amount of lean I have ... Very strange .. something had to shift ...
