I finally got my engine. It is a 351 modified and I got it for $50. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify what make and model it came from. I know it is a 1977. The numbers I got from the valve cover are D7AE-9C485-FB 7-041. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
for some info on the 351m put-ford engines 351m-in your search and lots of sites show up about the history of the 351m.
351m-400 could of been in a truck......tbird.....ltd....sta wagon ......74-up was dog years as far as power ..low comp like 8-1
Dog years or not,You CAN restore that horspower/compression......try installing a set of after-market cylinder heads or pop-up pistons......many mods can be made with this motor
If you find you have a 351m, make sure to swap in a 400 crank and pistons. Block and rods are the same. This will give you more power for little to no extra money. If you plan on installing this engine in a Mav/Com, then you will need to do an M2 suspension swap. It won't fit between shock towers. The engine mounts are unique and will have to be fabbed up. This engine also uses a 460 tranny bolt pattern... So the tranny issue will need to be addressed either with a C6 and all the fabbing that must be done to get that monster in a little car, or a C4 "super bell" must be found to use a C4 tranny. Good luck Dave BTW: Does the valve cover still have the emission sticker. Usually orange, but may have changed to white around 77... That will have the engine displacement on it in small print.
is there anyone who likes the 351-400 for anything in particular? towing, racing, something other than a LTD station wagon? i had a friend with a highboy and 400 and his sounded really nice, but i think my very slightly tweaked 390 tows and muds better:16suspect. i did have a 400 wagon as one of my first cars but it was a 2v completely stock with bad valves and burnt egr. cant blame the motor for the damage someone did to it.
Yes, actually if they're maintained and don't have all that lean-burn garbage all over it (read: emissions CRAP) they aren't bad engines. The "M" means modified cleveland..which means its basically a cleveland engine with a much taller deck, different motor mounts, and big block bellhousing pattern. It still has the same cleveland oiling system (which isn't all that great compared the the windsor engines). I've seen more than one that smoked the main bearings as normal wear. They usually have a deep thud knocking noise when running. 400's are torquey engines with their 4" stroke. Same bore/stroke as a 408 stroker...actually the 400 engine is 402". They just have a crappy intake manifold and carb, as well as super-restrictive exhaust. Put a set of 9:1 pistons in there, a good manifold and a 4V carb and you can easily have a 400+ HP/500+ lb-ft that runs on pump fuel. AND, since they are cleveland engines, the 4V cleveland heads will fit just fine (bolts right on). Make yourself a tunnel ram or something 'good', and they'll reward you with a TON of power. They do use really long rods...6.58" long. I am thinking that with that tall deck and a 4.25" stroke crank, you could EASILY make a 427" or 434" (.030" bore) with a little thought and some careful spending....
My grandpa has a '78 Bronco Ranger XLT with a 351M400. That thing must max out and start bogging at like 3,500 RPM's. It's a real dog. Stump pulling torque down low though, and sounds awesome with straight pipes. I personally wouldn't waste my time putting it in a Mav unless you do some serious modifications.
I've had 2 Broncos with that motor. Not a bad motor but big, heavy and not alot of power in stock form.
