What is a good carburetor for my 302? I need a new one..i currently have a 4-barrel and i'd like to keep it that way. Who knows the best buy for the cheapest buck?
From personal experience i woulden't say an edelbrock is any simpler to tune than a Holley. They are both good in their own right but you will find you will get more people who know how to properly set up a holley than you wll E brocks my
Holley is my brand of choice. The Street Avengers work well out of the box too. My neighbor just put a 770 SA on his 302 and it is sweet. His engine is fairly beefed up though. Most will tell you a 770 is on the big side. 570 for mild, maybe the 670 for a moderate build, and reserve the 770 for a fairly radical engine. Like said above, either carb needs tuning for the most part, so you need to learn and understand the carb you get, or have friends that do. What intake you got? Rear gear ratio? Cam specs? Heads? With that info, more folks will be willing to stick their neck out on specific recommendations.
motorcraft 4100 series 600 cfm,....might take a little to find, but they are super easy to tune, stay set once there.and will work on a stock up to moderate performance small block. yep, I said it,...a ford carb
I don't know if the "stay set once there" is somehow a jab at Holleys, but the same saying is true for Holleys as well. 99% of the time when it seems the carb is "out of tune", it's usually an ignition problem not a carb problem causing it. I ran my three duece Holley setup for over a year without ever having to adjust anything on them, after I spent a couple hours tuning them. When it seemed they did get out of tune, the problem was the distributor's vacuum advance diaphram causing the problem.
nope, no jab at Holleys,.I think Holley makes decent stuff. was just saying for an easy "set it and forget about it carb" the 4100 is great. I ran one for years and years and years without issue. and if you can find a 600cfm, they usually dont go for alot because a lot of people discard them not knowing what good carbs they are.if a person was to look for one, the 495cfms are most common, so it may take a bit to find. and I'll agree, when you think its a carb issue 90% of the time, its ignition.
I"m purchasing a holley 650cfm for my mav, finally decided, and went against my edelbrock insticts, and some wise words said were, stay with vacuum advance... just be sure if you have aftermarket intake to check heights, whoever had mycar before me put a torker 289 edelbrock intake, with an adapter and the stock 2bbl motocraft POS... and talk about hood problems, my carb right now sits a good 1.5 IN. taller than my fenders!!! ./sigh
