Just wanted to vent out. Went to a car show on sat. had a good time, alot of good comments. If they would of had third place trophies I would of gotten one, one vote, one stinking vote. Oh, well next time. For best in progress. Then today (sunday) took the wife and kids to go looking for mavs/comets found three. 74 2dr Mav bad shape, not for sale. 74 or 75 Comet 2dr worse shape, for trade (don't know what the guy wants, neither does he) 73 2dr Mav Ok'ish shape, five lug front and back, interior is shot, no motor, no tranny, three on the tree, gas tank is crushed, and the drivers door don't open, wants $350 for it. What you guys think, is the front and rear five bolt pattern worth 350, plus it has buckets. Some of the sheet metal is in ok shape, definetly a parts car. Should I save it or see if he will part with some of the parts I need and let him deal with the scraps?
You seem to be making a case for the 73, so there probably is the most potential there. What is wrong with it that makes it a parts car other than the gas tank and stuck door? Really rusty? If there is still a title and it is fairly solid, someone else might call that a project starter. Bucket seat tracks are tough to get ... usually $100-200 a set. The seats themselves can be reuphostered. The rear axle will go right into your car. If it is drum brakes up front, I wouldn't bother swapping them. Hold off for some discs ... same amount of work, world of difference in stopping power. Any other interesting factors like sport mirrors would sweeten the deal. It would be hard to say no to $350 if you have the room to part it out. Selling stuff off of it you don't need will help fund your car.
Buy the 73. Of course I'd offer him $250 for it first...never know. He's probably ready to get rid of it. You know he's not gonna fix her up.
Had sport mirrors, but they are gone, some parts are useable. No title. He needs the drivers rear quarter for his drag car. Ran the vin and is a standard mav. As for room, I have plenty.
Early Grabber buckets look like this ... Especially when they have a sweet reuholstering job like in the thread I borrowed the picture from ... hope they don't mind ... I believe 73 highback buckets will look similar but with vertically striped inserts. (That change may have been a later year, though) If the seats look cushier, they should be LDO buckets. Highback seat tracks have risers that pick the seats up about 2 inches. LDO tracks are lower. I will be using LDO tracks I have with my highbacks. I like the lower position and being 6'1", won't have any visibility issues, but my shortie wife may need a pillow. The most important thing about Mav seat tracks is that they get the seat in the right place front-to-back, and with the extra pieces on the inboard tracks, (bell-shaped riser on the front, trailer-hitch-lookin' piece out back), they get them level. If you have the seat tracks, many Ford seats up to modern ones will go right in the car correctly.
