i will admit to you guys that i dont know crap about gearing .... for starters what would happen if i changed out my 2.79's to 3.00's? i found a 8 in at the jy that had 3.00's and whats the possibility it has traction loc. how would the 3.00's differ w/ my 250 and c4 combo. right now it tops out around 60 mph. can some one please explane how the numbers work when dealing w/ gears.:dizzy:

That's only a 7% increase in ratio, you wouldn't notice it, not worth the effort. I would go for at least 3.25 or 3.50 gears. The numerically higher gears accelerate the car quicker and you engine turns a corresponding higher rpm providing more torque. It isn't always as straight forward when dealing with an auto trans, depending on what torque converter you have.

going from a 2.79 to a 3.00 is not much but you will get better accelaration not much and lower top speed the higher the number the quicker it is and lower top speed and probably not a posi very hard to find in 8 inchers

if your trying to get more mph out of the car going to a numaricly higher gear ratio wont help. heres the basic low down on what the gear rato means. the number that you see refered to as in 2.79s is how many times the drive shaft will have to turn to turn the tires 1 time. so the higher the number the more times the drive shaft is goin to have to turn to get one revolution out of the tires. now going to a numaricly higher gear ratio multiplys the torque applyed to the rear tires so you will have faster acceleration but not as much top end speed.

If your car maxes out at 60 mph, you have other problems...

That's what I'm thinking. Also,no Mav/Coms came w/traction-lok,if it's in a Pintang,er Mustang also,it could be but chances are slim-8" non open carriers are pretty scarce.

well it dosnt realy max out at 60 it just is at some high rpms. (dont know exactly what rpm) it dose better on flat land but most my driving is in the hills..... om going to check the rear if it has traction loc i'll just use the 3.00's. ill just runn different tires if so. i see a five speed in the near future. that would help w/ that overdrive.

Overdrive and 2:79 gears s#%k! Great for flat land cruising at high speed but,up hills and around town at 40 MPH...LOL...Thats where the Sprint is at right now.Gears and a posi are in its future but not this summer.Step up to 3:55s' or if you go OD go 3:70 or 3:80s'

Id be willing to say it isn't turning as hard as you think it is unless it isnt going into drive and staying in 2nd gear.Id get a tach in it so you can see whats going on.

I do Joe...The Aod goes into OD by its lonesom self at about 43 MPH...LOL... That puts the engine at 200 rpm above Idle and this things got one heck of a lope to it.LOTS of valve overlap.Fortunately it doesnt really get above 40 cruising around town.At 70 MPH on the truway it turns 1700 RPM.It didnt even use a quarter tank of gas last thursday on a 100 mi road trip...LOL... Its rediculous...LOL...Next year it gets some gears...for now,its just fine.(y)

I think an AOD will rob too much power from the six.302/AOD w/3.55 gears (t-5 would be better)is your best bet for mpg/power.
