I found out that a gas tank Renu shop is only 20 min form my place. :yahoo: My tank is bad, very bad. I am going to pull it and have them redo it since no one makes a 70 tank. I am assuming all I do to remove the tank is:

    1) remove the gas (well the leak will probably have this taken care of)
    2) take out all the screws around the tank in the trunk.
    3) take the bolts from around the filler opening.
    4) disconnect hose from sending unit
    5) lift out the tank thru the trunk

Does this all sound right? Am I missing something?

Sounds about right. Don't forget to unplug the fuel sender from the tank, but you will see that when you disconnect the hose.

The place 20min away is out of commission. Compressor down. He said $6K to rebuild it and no ETA. I got lucky found another 33min away. Got a est today of $200-$275 and a week turn around. Gonna try to get it up there this week. Said he has 13 tanks in line to be redone.

$6k to rebuild a gas tank? man that guy must use gold. or hes trying to retire off of you. crazy. i thought there was a way to put a 60s mustang tank in the 70 maverick. and those are under 200 for a new tank. check the tech artical section.

    etiquette?

Tanks is done. Driving the hour to get it tomorrow. I want to post some before and after pics. What exactly is the proper etiquette on that? Do you continue an old thread (this one) or start a new thread even thought its about the same thing?

I hope it works out good for you...just keep this thread going I guess. As a fellow 70 owner...I just didn't feel good about having my old tank repaired or coated. We had a Farmall tractor tank repaired and coated once and the image of flakes of coating floating in the fuel bowl still haunts me. I chose to go the hard route and install a new Mustang tank in my 70. I have the tank, but I haven't started modifying the trunk floor yet...but I just feel better knowing I'll have a new tank and I'll never have to worry about a 70 Maverick tank again.

I debated as well. I just dont have the equipment or the skill to cut and hack the trunk. I really need to get out of an apartment and into a house. LOL

    Wow - nice.

I wished the guy down here was as cheap. He wants close to $400 to clean, seal and recoat. Mine is a 76, so we are just going to buy a new tank for $170.
