Hi everyone I am a new member and so glad to have found this place .I just recieved delivery of a 1974 Mercury Comet last week this car is in beautiful shape . But the gas tank has a leak so I am getting ready to order a new one from J C Whitney tomorrow .I just found out they dont make the excact fit ones any more and I need to go with the later model and will need to replace the straps as well . But my question is do I need to get a new filler neck and sending unit also ..I read the post on refitting a Mustang tank but dont have a mig welder. so I am gonna pass on that one . any ideas would be appriciated.

As soon as I figure out how to post Pix .I will get one up my Comet is a 2 dr hard top with Red paint .

i used a later tank in my '73 mav. i took the sock off the sending unit and put a short piece hose with a filter in its place.

looking foward to seeing the pics. of your car....i think it's just a 2 dr.(no hard top).

the ...tank coating...is good if your tank is in good condition.
if it is then the thing to do is ...pull... the tank and take it to them. if not there is the extra cost of them removing/replacing it...

I would suggest fixing the leak. If it is a small leak....they are pretty easy for a radiator shop to fix.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
:Welcome:you don't need to replace the filler neck, also NAPA carries the 76 tank and straps for under $200 i think.

welcome to the board. I grew up in Maine and worked at Sugarloaf for 13 years.
I used POR15 tank repair kit for mytank and it worked great. But it is some work to get it cleaned etc.

Hello Bob Thanks for the info . I thought about something like that ,but the amount of rust and yuky stuff in the tank is never ending so I am gonna go ahead and put another tank in it .I hope to go skiing at sugar loaf next year . This year I am recovering from an broken ankle and just got off crutches . gonna take it easy for a while .

Danielle, welcome. You might be happiest with getting the tank restored. I have other car circles I hang out, and the people who have gone that route have been happy. Alex has a good suggestion as well as Frank to go to a later style tank. The 76 and 77 tanks are larger and take up some room if you want nice big dual exhaust out the back, but if you retain stock exhaust, or stick with under 3" pipes out the back you wont have a problem.

    Hello Dan .

I like the two tone paint job you have . And I just got a lead on a 1974 model tank so I wont have to retrofit a latter model year tank now . All I have to do is figure out how pay Pal works and I should have it in a week or so .

I want to thank every one for making my first day on the forum so welcoming . I really appriciated all the posts and hope some day I can help others as much as you all have helped me .
