Just changed the oil in my 77 comet 302 V8...Both the dipstick and the oil from the oil pan smelled like gas...Previous owner had last changed the oil in 2001...Can anyone tell me what would cause this ? Thanks, in advance...
if it's 5 year old oil i wouldn't worry about it too much, but i would change the oil in say another 1000 just to clean things out completely. you don't get all the oil in one change.
is that the old or new oil that has the smell? how many miles on the old oil? what does it look like? you get a little gas in your oil with regular use. but if it is a lot, you could have a bad intake manifold gasket, bad intake manifold, etc... do you have any other odd symptoms?
I'm betting the diaphram on your fuel pump is leaking. It will pump gas straight into the oil pan. A new pump and change of oil will most likely fix the problem.
Another thing that can do that is a dirty needle or float that's too low. When I rebuilt my first carb I got something wrong.. the fuel pressure in the line kept pushing gas into the carb/intake, and eventually the crankcase as it washed down the cylinder walls. Ended up with about 5 quarts of gas in my oil overnight.
I got a "new" unopened bottle of friction modifier in the garage, double wraped in plastic bags and the stink still makes its way out somehow. Yuck
